GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN !

Isaiah 52:7-10 TLB

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who bring the happy news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns. [8] The watchmen shout and sing with joy, for right before their eyes they see the Lord God bring his people home again. [9] Let the ruins of Jerusalem break into joyous song, for the Lord has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem. [10] The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

The phrase "Go Tell It on the Mountain" is deeply rooted in biblical narratives and themes. Whenever something good happens to us, it is expected that we should proclaim it as loudly as we can-from every high place, every mountain, and to as many people as possible. This allows us to share our joy over what the Lord has done for us and to help others recognize the miracle-working hand of God in our lives.

Within the Christian community, we often have testimony days or events where people who have been waiting on the Lord finally receive their breakthrough. This practice aligns with many Bible passages that encourage us to uplift one another. What better way to do this than by sharing God's goodness with everyone who will listen?

Jesus Himself instructs us in Matthew 28:19-20 to "go and tell the good news" all over the earth.

Go tell it on the mountaintops!

"Go Tell It on the Mountain" reflects the commandment Jesus gave His disciples to spread the Gospel to all nations-what we call the Great Commission. It emphasizes the importance of evangelism and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

The popular Christmas spiritual "Go Tell It on the Mountain" draws direct inspiration from the story of the shepherds in Luke 2:8-20. After witnessing the birth of Jesus, the shepherds "spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them" in Luke 2:17-18. This captures the proclamation of the good news of Jesus' birth far and wide, just as the shepherds did. It aligns with Jesus’ command to "go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation," reinforcing our call to spread the message everywhere.

What do you know? What have you heard that must be told or shouted from the mountaintop

What good fortune has the Lord blessed you with? What miracle has He done for you? What breakthrough are you enjoying that could encourage others?

The second stanza of the carol “Joy to the World” says:

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! He comes to make His blessings flow far as the curse is found!"*

The Savior came to reverse the curse wherever it is found. Reflect on all the places that means for you:

- The curse was felt in the shame of subjugation.

- In the injustice and abuse we endure daily at the hands of others.

- In the thankless toil of life.

- In broken families.

But the good news declares that all this is temporary, and Jesus will reverse it as He establishes a new world.

Yet, we often don’t talk enough about the saving aspect of the gospel, when we are meant to be shouting it as loud and as far as we possibly can.

As scripture instructs, we must share our stories, testimonies, and encounters as often as we can, using every opportunity to lead others to Christ the Redeemer. As the watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem sang with joy when they saw the Lord returning at the head of the multitude, so too should all believers be telling of God’s goodness on the mountains.

Go tell it on the mountain-proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ boldly and widely, inspired by both the shepherds' actions in Luke 2 and the prophetic imagery of Isaiah 52:7.

PRAYER: Father, grace me with boldness and courage to proclaim and shout of Your wondrous works and gift of salvation wherever and whenever I can, in Jesus’ name, amen.
