STOP MIXING GOD WITH OTHER STUFF!
Deuteronomy 6:13-16 AMPC
You shall [reverently] fear
the Lord your God and serve Him and swear by His name [and presence]. [14] You
shall not go after other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are round
about you; [15] For the Lord your God in the midst of you is a jealous God;
lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and He destroy you
from the face of the earth. [16] You shall not tempt and try the Lord your God
as you tempted and tried Him in Massah.
God is God alone and should
not be mixed with anything or anyone else, but today, that’s not the case.
Everywhere you look, you see professing Christians doing, saying, and handling
things that are not necessarily bad, but they are not godly either. This means
their complete trust is not in the Lord.
We see people who call
themselves Christians—Catholics, Protestants, Methodists, Pentecostals,
Anglicans, or whatever denomination—who find themselves crossing from one place
to another, blurring the lines of faith by mixing this and that to make what they
think they need. Essentially, they pick and choose what they deem necessary for
their faith, but of course, these are lies.
Verse thirteen says, “Fear
the Lord your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.” This Old
Testament instruction is echoed in the New Testament and confirms the
continuity of this principle.
We cannot say we fear God
and then choose to divide our reverence, loyalty, and honour for Him with
whatever else we choose.
The scripture is clear on
God’s sovereignty! Starting in Exodus 20:3—the Ten Commandments—the Lord
specifically says we must have no other gods besides Him. But we do, don’t we?
Exodus 20:4 adds, “You shall not make for yourself a carved image… You shall
not bow down to them nor serve them.” This foundational command underscores
God’s requirement for undivided worship.
For instance, we see
Christians and Muslims, Muslims who claim they are half-Muslim half-Christian,
Catholics who are half-Muslim, and now the most controversial of all, many
Christians are tipping themselves into Judaism, including (I’m sorry to say) most
of the so-called giants of faith or renowned men and women of God, who I think
should know better.
Psalm 81:9 clearly states
where the Lord stands on “mixture”! “Don’t worship foreign gods or bow down to
gods you know nothing about.”
The Bible is noticeably
clear and strict about not mixing the worship of God with other gods, idols, or
spiritual practices. This concept—called syncretism—is consistently condemned
as spiritual adultery, idolatry, and something that provokes God to anger.
The scripture is truly clear
and quite simple. What is your faith based on? The cross of Christ, the
finished work of the cross? Or on your own findings?
At some point, we must
choose whom we want to worship and belong to, as Elijah said in 1 Kings 18:21:
"How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow
Him. But if Baal, follow him." But the people didn’t answer him a word.
Yes, if the Lord is God and
you profess Him, then follow Him only!
Matthew 6:24 is clear: you
cannot be the slave of two masters! You will like one more than the other or be
more loyal to one than the other. You cannot serve both God and money. A
misplaced heart and a clouded eye lead to a misaligned will that tries to serve
two irreconcilably different masters. One cannot serve Allah, Buddha, or any
other god and Elohim at the same time. Eventually, a person will default to
serving one or the other.
Do not be yoked together
with those who do not believe. For what partnership is there between
righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with
darkness? declares 2 Corinthians 6:14. Any compromise in our faith affects our
intimacy with the Lord, who distances Himself from us as well. He already told
us in Exodus 34:14 that He is a jealous God, who requires exclusive devotion
from His followers, emphasizing that God wants to protect and guide us, urging
us not to worship other gods. This concept of jealousy is rooted in God’s love
and commitment to His creation, wanting to keep us safe within His fold.
If you’ve been following
other things along with God, repent and turn to Him only.
Isaiah 45:22-23 says, “Turn
to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no
other… Before Me, every knee will bow, by Me every tongue will swear
allegiance.” This highlights God’s uniqueness and the universal call to worship
Him alone. The true God is unique! The foreign idols and other stuff cannot
predict the future or deliver people from destruction. God is the only
righteous Savior.
REFLECTION QUESTION
- Are there areas of your
life that haven’t been surrendered to the Lord? To whom do these areas
belong?
- Would you say you’re
totally God’s, or do you occasionally look elsewhere for help and answers
besides the Lord?
- Have you compromised in
your faith by accepting and practising doctrines that are against the
scriptures?
- Are you willing and ready
to separate from every unequal yoke in your life?
PRAYER: Great and mighty
God, Father of all spirit and flesh, help me to remain yours and yours alone
and to never bow to another god. May no foreign god take your place in my life,
in Jesus’ name, amen.
