This scene happen for the plains of Moab where Israel pitch camp, and their presence fear King Balak. Instead of to seek God, Balak go find one spiritual “professional” wey go curse Israel. E send messengers go meet Balaam with clear agenda: “Come now, curse this people for me.” 

Balaam get reputation as man of spiritual power. Balak believe say anybody wey Balaam bless go dey blessed, and anybody wey e curse go dey cursed. Na this reputation make Balaam valuable — and easy to manipulate. 

Balaam first look obedient. E tell messengers say e fit only talk wetin God allow (Numbers 22:18). But under that surface, e get divided heart. God don already talk clear: “You no go go with them; you no go curse the people, because I don bless them” (Numbers 22:12). Still, when Balak send more big men with bigger promises, Balaam still entertain the offer again. 

This one show Balaam internal struggle. E know God will, but money and honour dey pull am. Peter later describe Balaam as person wey “love the wages of unrighteousness” (2 Peter 2:15). Jude call him way “the error of Balaam for profit” (Jude 11). Balaam get gift, but greed contaminate di gift. 

Balak strategy resemble wetin manipulators dey use today: 

- Appeal to ego: E send “more honourable” princes (Numbers 22:15). 

- Increase reward: “I go promote you to very great honour” (Numbers 22:17). 

- Apply pressure: Balak no stop to insist make Balaam come. 

Manipulators sabi say persistence, flattery, and money fit shift person heart if e no really stand gidigba for God. 

Balaam, even though e look spiritual outside, he dey tempted inside. E still go back to God second time, dey hope for different answer — sign say him heart don already tilt toward compromise. 

Warning to people wey dem dey manipulate: God always ready to interrupt our wrong journey. God allow Balaam go, but He vex because Balaam motive corrupt (Numbers 22:22). Angel of the Lord block road three times, and Balaam donkey see wetin Balaam no fit see. Dis moment show blindness wey dey come when spiritual leaders allow greed cover their discernment. 

Donkey rebuke na holy irony: di “seer” no see, but animal see. God dey warn Balaam — and everybody wey wan follow that kind path — say spiritual gift no dey cover spiritual corruption. 

Even with all di money, sacrifice, and pressure wey Balak use try change prophetic outcome, Balaam no fit curse Israel. Every time e open mouth, na blessing come out instead of curse (Numbers 23:8, 20). God always spoil manipulation plan. 

This show strong truth: No level of manipulation fit overturn wetin God don bless. 

Balak try change location, increase sacrifice, and press Balaam, but God will stand. Manipulators fit try influence result, but God sovereignty no dey sell. 

Spirit of Balaam still dey today: 

- Leaders wey dey use spiritual authority for personal gain. 

- People wey dey manipulate others with “prophetic” words. 

- Ministries wey money don replace mission. 

- Believers wey dey compromise truth because of honour, influence, or reward. 

This story warn us make we guard our heart, check motives, and refuse financial or emotional manipulation. 

Even though Balaam later talk blessing, him heart no really change. Afterward, e advise Balak make e use temptation carry Israel enter sin (Numbers 31:16). Last‑last, Balaam die among Israel enemies (Joshua 13:22). Him story warn us say gifted person without integrity go turn danger to himself and to others. 

REFLECTION QUESTIONS 

•     Where I dey see small‑small temptation to compromise my convictions because of approval, influence, or reward? 

•     How I fit grow heart wey value obedience to God pass opportunity, honour, or money? 

•     Which safeguards I fit put for my life so I no go become victim of manipulation — or turn manipulator — for spiritual or relationship setting? 

PRAYER: Lord, purify my motives and anchor my heart inside Your truth. Keep me from Balaam path and from every form of manipulation. Teach me to value obedience above opportunity and integrity above influence. Make my life reflect Your righteousness, and make my words align with Your will. Amen.
