DON’T BURY YOUR TALENT!
1 Peter 4:10-11 GNT
Each one, as a good manager
of God's different gifts, must use for the good of others the special gift he
has received from God. [11] Those who preach must preach God's messages; those
who serve must serve with the strength that God gives them, so that in all
things praise may be given to God through Jesus Christ, to whom belong glory
and power forever and ever. Amen.
Every believer has been
entrusted with God‑given
talents—spiritual gifts, divine
abilities, and unique graces that were intentionally placed within us by the
Father. These gifts are not random, accidental, or optional. They are
purposeful deposits of heaven, given so that we may serve, build, strengthen,
and glorify God in the earth. The question is not whether you have a talent,
but whether you have discovered, valued, and used what God has entrusted to
you.
Peter reminds us in 1 Peter
4:10–11 that each believer has received a gift and must use it faithfully as a
steward of God’s multifaceted grace. He divides these gifts into two broad
categories: speaking gifts and serving gifts. Those who speak must speak as
carriers of God’s oracles—not their own ideas, opinions, or preferences. Those
who serve must do so with the strength that God supplies—not human effort,
ambition, or pride. Why? So that in everything, God alone is glorified.
Yet many believers bury
their talents. Some hide them out of fear, insecurity, comparison, or a desire
for something “more glamorous.” Others bury their gifts because they feel their
talent is not celebrated, not popular, not impressive, or not aligned with what
they personally desire. But Scripture is clear: our talents were not given for
self‑promotion but for kingdom
edification.
Romans 12:6 teaches that our
gifts are given “in proportion to our faith.” This means God gives us what
aligns with His purpose for our lives—not what aligns with our personal
preferences. Those with the gift of prophecy must speak only when the Holy Spirit
truly reveals something. Those with gifts of service, mercy, leadership,
teaching, giving, or encouragement must use them diligently, joyfully, and
faithfully. We do not get to choose our gift; we only get to choose our
response to the gift.
Jesus’ parable in Matthew
25:14–29 confronts us with a sobering truth: God expects us to invest what He
has given us. The master rebuked the servant who buried his talent, not because
he lost it, but because he refused to use it. The master said, “You ought to
have invested the talent.” In other words, doing nothing with your gift is
unacceptable in the kingdom.
Many believers bury their
talents because they think they deserve more—more visibility, more applause,
more responsibility, more recognition. But Jesus teaches that talents are
distributed “each according to his ability.” God is not obligated to give us anything,
yet in His grace, He entrusts us with something valuable. What He gives is
always intentional, always sufficient, and always meaningful.
Your talent—whether it is
teaching, intercession, administration, giving, hospitality, creativity,
leadership, or compassion—is a divine tool for kingdom advancement. It is not
small. It is not insignificant. It is not inferior. It is not accidental. It is
a kingdom investment.
Proverbs 22:29 reveals a
powerful principle: diligence in your gift brings elevation. God promotes those
who faithfully steward what He has placed in their hands. Your lifting is tied
to your talent. Your influence is tied to your talent. Your next level is tied
to your talent. God will not promote what you refuse to use.
So ask yourself: What am I
doing with what God gave me?
Am I investing it?
Am I hiding it?
Am I comparing it?
Am I despising it?
Or am I faithfully
multiplying it?
For every servant who uses
their gift well, God promises a reward: “Well done, good and faithful servant…
enter into the joy of your master.”
This is not just
affirmation—it is promotion, expansion, and eternal honour.
Beloved, do not bury your
talent.
Do not hide what God has
placed in you.
Do not underestimate the
value of your gift.
Do not wait for perfect
conditions.
Do not compare your grace
with another’s.
Use what God gave you and
watch Him multiply it.
Invest your talent. Steward
your talent. Honour God with your talent.
Your gift is needed. Your
gift is valuable. Your gift is divine.
Think before you bury that
talent!
