BELIEVER’S AUTHORITY

Matthew 28:18-19 NLT

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 

[19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

 

Authority is legal and rightful power, a right to command or to act on something. It is the power exercised by a person in virtue of their office or trust, to have dominion, jurisdiction, and authorization, such as the authority of a prince over subjects, of parents over children, and the authority of a court.

The choices we make, the things we say, the actions we take, and what we believe about what is happening around us determine whether God or Satan dominates our lives. Satan can’t control us outside of our will. He cannot do anything without our cooperation and consent. But we must recognize that we’re in a battle and so must exercise the authority of our position in Christ.

The believer’s authority is the legal or rightful power bestowed on us by God with the right to command situations and the ability or strength to do things in the name of Jesus according to John 14:13. In John 19:11, Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above.” God is the ultimate source of authority over people’s lives and over governments.

2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.” Because Scripture comes from the mouth of God, it has ultimate authority over our lives.

So many are still unable to recognize and accept this authority as promised in Matthew 21:23. When Jesus gave power and authority to the disciples over spiritual and earthly issues, He gave it to all believers. When we are born again, we receive the Holy Spirit, who gives this power and authority to us. This authority is available through faith to all believers.

When we hold the keys to our homes, cars, or offices, it means we have the legal authority over them, and we have the power to decide whom we allow in. So it is with the believer’s authority. The authority to loosen what is bound and bind what is loosened in heaven is in our hands and mouth according to Matthew 16:19.

Every believer has the power and authority to cast out demons or heal the sick. We don’t need someone else to do it for us if we can exercise our spiritual or believer’s authority. We all have spiritual power and authority to do anything Christ did and much more. Jesus delegated authority and power to us in Matthew 10:7-8. This way, we’re not left defenceless to the mercies of the enemy.

God is the ultimate authority and the source of all human authority. So, what can you do with this authority? We can cast out demons, heal the sick, raise the dead, speak in new tongues, tread on scorpions or serpents, or be unharmed from drinking deadly things (please don’t do this purposely).

We have authority over the elements (Mark 4:39), over insects or critters that sting (Luke 10:19), and for supernatural protection (Proverbs 18:10). Matthew 6:10 says we can do anything on earth that is already done in heaven.

We don’t need to ask God to do this work. He won’t. Why? Because Jesus quite clearly states that we are to do the binding and loosing ourselves, to command evil spirits to flee. Jesus did not leave behind a powerless church when He ascended to heaven. He imparted divine authority to those who follow Him, along with the Holy Spirit’s power to accomplish great things on earth.

There’s a battle raging daily in the spiritual realm for our hearts and lives, and the Lord has given us the authority to influence situations and overthrow adversities in His name. Remember, you are in charge and victory is yours through Christ.

PRAYER: Everlasting Father, thank you for deputizing me with power and authority to do great things in Jesus’ name, amen.
