BOASTING IN GOD!

Jeremiah 9:23-24 TLB

The Lord says: Let not the wise man bask in his wisdom, nor the mighty man in his might, nor the rich man in his riches.

[24] Let them boast in this alone: That they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord of justice and of righteousness whose love is steadfast; and that I love to be this way.

Boasting in any form is very unattractive! Boasting or bragging is to talk or write about oneself or something related to oneself in a proud or self-admiring way. It speaks of excessive pride and self-satisfaction in one’s achievements, possessions, or abilities. Boasting is when we feel a sense of satisfaction, self-worth, and pride in our achievements, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it becomes so when no other person or power is appreciated for contributing to our success.

If we must boast, the Bible encourages us to boast in God and not in ourselves. Paul used the phrase “boast in the Lord” in 1 Corinthians 1:31, encouraging us to take our eyes away from ourselves and others and place them on God. Nobody should ever boast about their wisdom or ability. Without God, we would have none of these. Once we’ve had experiential knowledge of God, we would give all glory and honour to Him, boasting about who He is and not who we are.

Morbid self-glorification is steeped in pride that makes us want to take the place of God and accord ourselves the characters and abilities that are either not natural for us to have or too advanced for man to exhibit. Psalm 34:2 says, “My life makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble and afflicted hear and be glad.” We can’t force God to do anything for us; it’s His benevolent mercy that humbles us to the place where our boast should only be in Him.

We see Moses’s extensive boast in the Lord in Exodus 34:6-7, proclaiming God’s divine mercy which is displayed for all to see. Moses was boasting in the glory of God’s grace and goodness, attributes that are illustriously displayed in our lives daily.

Boasting in God has nothing to do with worldly possessions, ability, position, knowledge, or with an alternate reality. Our boast should be in God’s ability to glorify Himself even in our weakness. No one is wise by human standards, not many are influential, and not many are of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of this world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him. It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption according to 1 Corinthians 1:26-30.

We have no reason to boast because, humanly speaking, we are weak, foolish, lowly, and despised. All the glory goes to God alone as stated in Isaiah 42:8, He will not share it with anyone. Believers can sometimes be arrogant in their knowledge and walk with God, making it seem like the Bible is for their personal consumption, individual understanding, and interpretation, but not according to 2 Peter 2:20. We mustn’t boast of knowing the Lord better than others or being used by God more than others. God doesn’t favour one person over the other because of their boasting ability.

We see pastors and ministers boasting about their big ministries and the number of people they saved instead of the lives God has transformed. If you want to glorify someone, then let it be God to encourage others.

PRAYER: Father, I humbly repent of self-glorification and graciously boast only in You, God, my creator. In Christ’s name, amen.
