JUST A SHADOW

Hebrews 10:1 CSB

Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.


It’s only a shadow! A shadow is a dark area or shape produced by a body coming between rays of light and a surface: a silhouette, outline, shape, contour, or profile. Depending on the context, it can also represent ominous oppressiveness, sadness, and gloom—a sense of gloom, black cloud, threat, and blight.

Everything we go through in life on earth is just a shadow. They have no substance that can outweigh God because God Himself is our shadow in whom we can hide and take refuge, according to Psalm 57:1. Imagine taking shelter only in the shadow of God and how comforting and secure that is. Then imagine the total protection that comes from hiding within the totality of God’s presence. God’s shadow not only protects us but, according to Psalm 23:4, He even walks through the dark valley of death with us, making us brave and unafraid.

Hosea 14:7 says those who live in God’s shadow will again raise grain, and they will blossom like the vine. The enemy specializes in making things look real and deceiving us into accepting his lies. We must remember that all the enemy’s tricks are just shadows and nothing else if we trust in God and hold on to His word.

We treat affliction as all too real and forget that they will eventually pass, but God will remain with us as we pass through whatever we’re facing. We live within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods, declares Psalm 91:1. This implies that God is always near; our nearness to God is within His shadow. God is not a shadow, but He surrounds us with His shadow for protection.

When we go through the fire and storms of life, as mentioned in Isaiah 43:2, we can trust God to protect us with His shadow. As stated in Isaiah 51:16, He has put His words in our mouth and hidden us safely within His hand. It’s just a shadow! Sin is and will always create a shadow that separates us from God. A shadow can symbolize imperfection and sin. In James 1:17, God’s unchanging nature is contrasted with the shifting shadows, emphasizing that unlike shadows, God is perfect and constant.

The Shadow of Death mentioned in Psalm 23 is a powerful metaphor for the fear and reality of death. Walking through the “valley of the shadow of death” symbolizes the darkest and most perilous times in one’s life when everything is dark, gloomy, and bleak. Yet, with the assurance of God’s presence, we can overcome it without fear.

Life is for living, but most people aren’t even making any effort to live for eternity, treating life on earth as if it’s the beginning and end. According to Psalm 144:4, life is only a passing shadow. Shadows are not real; they are just shadows. So many things we go through in life are just shadows. The pain, just a shadow! The disappointments, just a shadow! The sickness, just a shadow! The loss of job and income, just a shadow! Everything under the sun is just a shadow, according to Job 8:9.

No shadow on earth can overshadow our Lord. He alone is the shadow without shade. The Christian life is all about spiritual warfare, and shadows can also represent the presence of spiritual battles and the forces of darkness. Ephesians 6:12 speaks of our struggle against spiritual forces of evil, which can be symbolized by shadows, but we must always remember that it’s just a shadow. Everything is just a shadow, but God is the ultimate, protective, safe, and real shadow.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for being a shadow of protection for me. Keep me hidden in your shadows always. In Jesus’ name, amen.
