NO OTHER GOD!

Luke 16:13 AMPC

No servant is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (riches, or anything in which you trust and on which you rely).


We are all familiar with the Ten Commandments, but not all of us care to honour them. Some may think they are outdated or part of the Old Testament, while others believe that the death and resurrection of Christ nullify the commandments. However, the Bible strictly forbids idolatry. One of the commands in the Ten Commandments is found in Exodus 20:4-5: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.”

The NIV Study Bible states, “No deity, real or imagined, is to rival the one true God in Israel’s heart and life.” Worshipping other gods gives a false sense of security from a source other than God, who is everywhere, all-powerful, and all-knowing.

1 Kings 18 provides a good example of why we shouldn’t have any other god. Those who worship “other gods” will ultimately face the same fate as the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. Elijah the prophet challenged them to a duel. Both Elijah and the prophets of Baal offered sacrifices to their respective deities, but they did not burn the sacrifices. The god who responded to their entreaties and took their sacrifice would be declared the one true God for all Israel. The prophets of Baal started early, praying and pleading with Baal to burn their sacrifice. Meanwhile, Elijah taunted them, saying, “Shout louder… Surely, he is a god. Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” In the end, the prophets of Baal were all killed by the Israelites after the one true God demonstrated His power, burning up the offering, the water, the wood, the stones, and the soil at the altar.

Anything can be an idol, and today everything has become an idol. Society has replaced God in every sphere of life, putting many things in place of God and worshipping and serving these things instead of God the Father. Our god may be pleasure, work, marriage, family, children, and even ministry. These things aren’t necessarily wrong in themselves, but when they become our focus, they are now the god we bow to.

Deuteronomy 5:7 emphatically states, “Do not worship any other gods.” Exclusive worship of the Lord is the logical response to the fact that there is no other god like Him, as clearly stated in Isaiah 46:9. No matter what form, a god other than God is always in opposition to Almighty God—the Great I AM. He places supreme importance on His position as Lord. Anything that usurps God’s position as sovereign Lord is a god. These gods are created images fashioned by human will and can take the forms of people, locations, passions (including wealth, prosperity, health, love, etc.), and things. A god is an idol we lift above our Creator God.

We must reject idols for two reasons: first, because they are false and cannot save or change our lives for the better; secondly, idols cut us off from our spiritual source, God, and because of this, we turn our backs even more on God.

Christians are betrothed to Christ according to 2 Corinthians 11:2. We are His bride and are to be presented to Him as pure and spotless at the culmination of history when we are in glory, according to Ephesians 5:25-32. Revelation 19:7 tells us we will be the bride at the wedding ceremony of the Lamb. The question is, how can we worship another god (idol) and remain spotless and pure? The answer is we cannot.

Don’t allow any idols to take God’s place in your life. Give God His rightful place in your life and never bow to any other god.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the strength and grace to never bow down to a lifeless god or replace You with other gods. In Jesus’ name, amen.
