GODLY FAVOUR!

Psalm 5:12 CSB

For you, LORD, bless the righteous one; you surround him with favor like a shield.


Godly favour is something we should all desperately desire. It can be described as divine kindness or the act of true compassion from God toward needy and undeserving human recipients like us. The favour of God can be seen as tangible evidence that a person has the approval of the Lord, while God shows favour to those who delight in, connect with, and give honour to Him.

Favour is closely related to grace—the unmerited favour of God in the Bible. Those who have received Jesus as their Saviour are saved by grace through faith according to Ephesians 2:8–9. They know the favour of God and the expression of Godly favour. Without faith, it is impossible to please God according to Hebrews 11:6, but those who have saving faith in God’s Son are declared righteous in Romans 4:5 and live in God’s favour.

God’s favour or grace gives us the ability or strength to do things that humans are incapable of doing. It is only by God’s grace (or undeserved favour) that we can experience eternal life, and it is only by God’s grace that we can live for the Lord during the sometimes-difficult paths He has for us in this life.

The Lord shows us favour in diverse ways throughout our lifetime. Godly favour is the source of all mercy: no matter how far we stray or how low we get, God’s merciful favour locates us. In His mercy, He shows us pity (Isaiah 60:10).

Through Godly favour, we are granted a life full of favour on all sides. God is so good that He cannot delight in either the depression or ruin of His children. When He allows us to be afflicted, it is for our advantage, and no matter how long the affliction lasts, His favour lasts even longer, covering us like a shield against damage and destruction (Psalm 34:5).

The favour of God is like a shield because the Lord loves His children so much, He made His love into a shield that surrounds His children. The same way the Godly favour on Christ is expressed in Luke 2:52 is the same favour the Lord surrounds His saints with on every side. And by His mercy, we continually grow in favour and stature.

We are victorious through the favour of God. We are all in a battle, fighting on the frontline with unseen and unrecognisable opponents and weapons, and without the Godly favour resting on us and saturating us, we have no hope of victory. As Psalm 44:3 states, we don’t win by our hands or physical weapons.

God never leaves those He favours. His favour can be felt in the spirit. With the favour of the Lord, we have peace in our spirits that our sins are forgiven according to Romans 4:7. We can also feel a confidence that no matter what happens to us in this world, we are within the plan of God declares Psalm 86:11, and that He is with us always as stated in Isaiah 41:10. As we continue to walk in Godly favour, He equips us to overcome struggles. Our devotion and trust in Him will be rewarded in Matthew 10:42, and our eyes are illuminated to all the blessings in our situations that were previously unseen.

PRAYER: Lord, I decree and declare that I shall walk in uprightness because Godly favour rests on me always in Jesus’ name, amen.
