SPIRIT OF WISDOM
Ephesians 1:17 AMPC
[For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him,
Wisdom is an active spirit, one that we can progressively understand as Proverbs 1:1 state. We can become conscious of wisdom through observation and by seeking the Lord, as James 1:5 encourages. The spirit of wisdom is a divine, God-cantered comprehension of life's practical matters. God recognizes our need for wisdom and offers it generously when we ask.
The spirit of wisdom, infinite in attribute and instilling wisdom in believers as Isaiah 11:2 describes, is accessible to all believers. Proverbs 3:19-20 reveals that wisdom played a crucial role in the creation of the world. Wisdom's involvement in creation and providence makes it commendable to us, who may possess this invaluable attribute in proportion to our finite powers, and we are thus urged by the Lord to seek it. According to Psalm 104:24, wisdom is inherent in God, mirrored in creation, and integral to human existence.
Wisdom enables the mind to grasp a full understanding of human life and its moral fulfilment, as bestowed by the Holy Spirit. It is a special capacity vital for complete human existence and can be gained through education and mental application.
Wisdom is to be pursued not as an end but for its contribution to the meaning of life, for life, like wisdom, is a gift from God. The wise, as Proverbs elucidates, are not necessarily the most intelligent in society but are those known for understanding, patience, diligence, trustworthiness, self-control, modesty, and similar virtues. In essence, a person with wisdom
Wisdom can be both positive and negative, as Paul described in his message as being “not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power” in 1 Corinthians 2:4. Purely human wisdom has no ultimate merit of its own, and Paul quotes the Old Testament to demonstrate that God would destroy human wisdom in 1 Corinthians 1:19. A clear distinction between good and evil wisdom is provided in James 3:13-18. A person whose life reflects jealousy, and selfish ambition does not have the true spirit of wisdom of God but is earthly-minded and unspiritual. True wisdom is God-given; this wisdom is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity.” As wisdom was the primary possession of God, so too it was reflected in the life and ministry of Jesus. Jesus, during the years of his growth, reflected in his life the increase of wisdom in Luke 2:40, 52, and his opponents, as well as his friends, recognized the wisdom in his teaching in Matthew 13:54. Paul, in his prayers for the saints, asks that God “may give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that we may know him better”.
Since wisdom is rooted and grounded in God, true and spiritual wisdom is God’s gift. It can be seen in the lives and words of the servants of God such as Stephen in Acts 6:10 and Paul in 2 Peter 3:15. The Spirit of wisdom, which provides the knowledge that enables us to live the life given by God, is to be desired for oneself and prayed for in others, according to Colossians 1:9. The spirit of wisdom and revelation is not some mysterious blessing given to a special few, and it is not the ability to speak as a prophet. Rather, it is the work of the Holy Spirit to help the people of God understand the things of God more fully and completely.
PRAYER: Lord, God of wisdom, thank you for inviting me to ask for wisdom, I prayer that I be filled with the spirit of wisdom beyond measures in Jesus’ name, amen.
