THAT'S NOT FAIR

Ecclesiastes 9:11 AMPC

I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, neither is bread to the wise nor riches to men of intelligence and understanding nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

Life is so unfair on so many levels! The fairness or unfairness of life sometimes makes us question the faithfulness of God, but we must remember that life is full of variables, but God is the one constant we have.

Jeremiah 17:9 says our heart, regardless of who we are, is deceptively and desperately wicked and will operate with fairness and unfairness when it suits us, but God remains steadfastly fair according to Psalm 25:8.

We expect to be treated fairly, but we often encounter people and situations that dish out unfairness that again causes us to question God. We are treated unfairly daily, as we in turn treat others unfairly, and we moan and complain about the unfairness of life.

Well, unfortunately, life isn’t really fair in any way. Otherwise, God in His righteousness would treat us as we deserve, and rightly so, but instead, He offers us unfailing and faithful fairness where there shouldn’t be any.

How fair are you to those around you? How fair are you to God’s expectations of you?

From the beginning of time, we see man’s inhumanity in dishing out unfair treatment to others, even starting with Cain and Abel in Genesis 4. How fair was it that because of his displeasure with God, he killed his brother?

That’s not fair! Life is not fair! Nothing happens as we plan it all the time. It may not always be a case of fairness or unfairness but just a step to our divine destination.

Life is like the roll of the dice; you never know what you’ll get at any point: favour or disfavour, honour or dishonour, mercy or judgment, and fairness or unfairness. Whatever comes your way happens to everyone else: rich, poor, skilled, unskilled, wise, and foolish. Life happens to everyone, and all experience unfairness and fairness at some point in life.

Joseph probably thought “that’s not fair” so many times in his life, through all the ordeals he experienced, the disadvantages, discriminations, accusations, and judgment.

“That’s not fair” is a running theme in the Bible, but all of those who experienced a “that’s not fair” moment finally realize what many of us still need to accept as stated in Romans 8:28: that no matter how unfair a situation, how unfair and disadvantaged, God will still use it for His glory and purpose.

Isaiah 40:29 says God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. In a society where life is often unfair, God reassures us that He is the source of strength and empowerment for those who feel weary and weak and have experienced unfairness. Remember that God’s fairness extends to providing the necessary strength and support for those experiencing unfairness.

When we are overwhelmed with the unfairness of life, this verse invites us to lean on Him, knowing that He is the ultimate source of strength and that His power is made perfect in our weakness.

How fair was it that Isaac kept digging wells that were seized by the Philistines in Genesis 26? No fair! He may have thought it, but he certainly didn’t voice it or blame the Lord.

What did David do to deserve being chased all over the place by King Saul? “That’s not fair” was certainly David’s mantra in some cases, but he still didn’t allow it to deter him from trusting and obeying God.

That’s just not fair! How fair was it that Dinah, innocently looking to make friends with women her age, fell into the hands of Shechem and was raped in Genesis 34?

Yes, life is not fair a lot of the time, but God expects us to show fairness in our dealings. Emphasizing the importance of fairness and justice is Isaiah 33:15, which states that those who live in God’s kingdom are honest, reject fraud, avoid taking bribes, and refuse to listen to those who plot evil. As believers, we are called to seek justice and treat others with fairness and equality.

That’s not fair, but God is with you.

PRAYER: Father, help me to always e air in all my dealing and to see unfairness as something you frown on in Jesus’ name, men.
