THE BEGINNING AND ENDING
Genesis 3:1-6 NASB
Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
[2] The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;
[3] but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”
[4] The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! [5] For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil.”
[6] When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.
The shortest span of events in history happened at the very beginning of history. As soon as God created the world, it ended, at least spiritually and figuratively. There are so many things happening all at once in this short passage that we need to properly understand to avoid falling into Satan’s traps.
Know and understand the vision and goal before ever embarking on anything. It would help us confidently answer our accusers, stop us from confusion, loss, and failure while maintaining our path. Granted that it was Adam God directly instructed, but he must have given Eve the same simple instructions, so why did she embellish the instructions?
So many of us do so, don't we? I have caught myself doing the same sometimes and have had to quickly repent of stretching what God told me to make it sound better or make me look good. No matter the reason for doing so, it's always a good idea to confidently declare God's word, for they are sure, according to Isaiah 55:11. Satan knows the word too, sadly more than most Christians, as demonstrated in Matthew 4:6, where he quoted Psalm 91:11-12 to try and tempt Jesus.
"Try" is what he did and still does with us today, and it's our responsibility to hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering according to Hebrews 10:23. How can someone give us something we already own? 2 Corinthians 1:20 declares that God’s promises to us are established from the beginning, yet Satan is here promising Eve what already belongs to her, and she fell for it. It's like stealing your own possession.
Verse five is worthy of note. Sure, God knows what's best for us, but He still gave us the free will to choose, hoping that we can choose right and wise. Whatever God allows is surely what is best for us, and as promised in Romans 8:28, it's profitable to us and glorifies God.
Wisdom begins and ends with and in God. And if we desire more of it, God is liberal to give us more as invited to ask in James 1:5. Satan was cunning to tell us that God doesn't want us to have wisdom but notice that this wisdom will only be gained by us falling into sin as Eve saw in verse six.
It pays to know the word of God and what's been written about you as 2 Timothy 3:16 clearly states, the word of God is our map and manual for life. Knowledge of the word of God is what gives us the confidence, courage, and strength to flee from the enemy as instructed in James 4:7.
As earlier stated, God’s word is sure, and we see that surety happen in Genesis 5:4-5 as God predicted in Genesis 2:17. Although the Bible didn't tell us of Eve's death, Adam surely died, meaning that she died too. Even though God and His word are longsuffering as stated in 2 Peter 3:9, it will surely come to pass. When, where, and how, we don't know, but surely, it will. We must, therefore, be careful of handling the word wrongly.
Whenever you find yourself fact-checking the Lord’s word against someone and something else, get quickly back to the source of all wisdom and allow the one who is the beginning and ending, the author and finisher, Jesus according to Hebrews 12:2 to help you.
Be careful of the deceitful word of the enemy, who has a well-worked-out method to tempt us by appealing to our flesh, eyes, and pride as we see him do with Eve. Be discerning to see his strategy at work and overcome him by the power of the word and the name of Jesus.
PRAYER: Lord, strengthen me and grant me wisdom to recognize and overcome the lies and temptations of Satan in Jesus’s name, amen.
