ICHABOD !

1 Samuel 4:17-22 TLB

"and Israel has been defeated and thousands of the Israeli troops are dead on the battlefield. Hophni and Phinehas were killed too, and the Ark has been captured."

[18] When the messenger mentioned what had happened to the Ark, Eli fell backward from his seat beside the gate and his neck was broken by the fall, and he died (for he was old and fat). He had judged Israel for forty years.

[19] When Eli's daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, who was pregnant, heard that the Ark had been captured and that her husband and father-in-law were dead, her labor pains suddenly began.

[20] Just before she died, the women who were attending her told her that everything was all right and that the baby was a boy. But she did not reply or respond in any way.

[21-22] Then she murmured, "Name the child 'Ichabod,' for Israel's glory is gone." (Ichabod means "there is no glory." She named him this because the Ark of God had been captured and because her husband and her father-in-law were dead.)

Ichabod is a significant figure whose name means "the glory has departed" or "no glory." Ichabod was born during a time of great distress for Israel. His mother went into labor upon hearing that the Ark of the Covenant had been captured by the Philistines, and that her husband, Phinehas, and father-in-law, Eli, had died. She decided to name her son Ichabod to signify the departure of God's glory from Israel.

Ichabod's story serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the importance of repentance and faith in God's plan, even during difficult times.

Where is the glory of God in society today? God’s glory seems to be absent even from the church. NO GLORY!

Phinehas’s wife named her child out of the despondency she felt at the loss of her husband, the defeat of Israel’s army, and the capture of the ark. It sounds a lot like the body of Christ now, doesn’t it? Lost hope, faith, low expectation from all around and even of God, defeatist attitude, and almost slave-like existence to make ends meet.

We have become people of low spirits from loss of hope or courage. We’ve become disheartened, discouraged, dispirited, downhearted, low-spirited, in low spirits, hopeless, downcast, and cast down.

Our faith walk has become a struggle for many, a chore for some, and for others, an endurance test. Where is the glory— EL HAKABODH—THE GOD OF GLORY? Where is the magnificent weight of God’s presence in our gathering? If God were to write about our generation, it would be a repetition of Judges: “and everyone did what was right in their own eyes.”

The story of Ichabod carries significant lessons that can be applied to modern times. Ichabod's story reminds us of the importance of maintaining a genuine relationship with God. Today, this can translate to being mindful of our spiritual practices and ensuring they are sincere and heartfelt, rather than superficial like we see happening with so many Christians, leaders, and churches. Genuine spiritual awareness seems to have become a thing of the past.

Despite the tragedy in this story, it points to the possibility of renewal and redemption, encouraging us to seek forgiveness and strive for personal and communal improvement, even after setbacks, with renewed hope in God. Tragedy always occurs in the absence of God’s glory. Eli and all his family died, and his daughter-in-law used her last breath to tell the world that the glory of God left the tabernacle with the ark because the Israelites defamed God’s glory. Exactly as society is doing today.

Where is God’s glory? Even the church is changing long-established acts and practices of worship to please the woke society we inhabit. There are consequences to all our actions.

Ichabod! It’s not just a name but a consequence. The events surrounding Ichabod's birth highlight the consequences of straying from righteous paths. Today, this serves as a reminder that our actions have repercussions, and living with integrity and faithfulness is crucial.

By reflecting on Ichabod's story, we can draw valuable insights into maintaining spiritual fervor, understanding the impact of our actions, and fostering hope and renewal in our lives.

PRAYER: Father Lord, I pray for the restoration of my glory and virtue in the name of Jesus. Father, you are the God of restoration, I pray that you restore our glory in Jesus’ name, amen.
