PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT
Psalm 119:34 NLT
Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart.
There’s no expertise or experience in spiritual matters. No matter how long we walk with the Lord, we never become experts or experienced enough to become complacent. Unlike in the world, we must keep at spiritual things until we reach our goal or get the expected result.
The Bible is packed full of nuggets to help us through whatever we go through. Sadly, we are always quick to stick to only one verse, maybe because it worked for us in the past, is easy to remember, or is a comfort verse when there may be plenty of others more suited to our situation.
For us to gain mastery of anything, we must keep at it until it’s perfected. Practice Makes Perfect. Jesus preached that his servants become perfect, but we cannot become perfect without putting God’s Word into practice (Matthew 5:48).
Practicing something repeatedly is the key to mastering that skill or achieving that goal. There are many verses that emphasize the importance of practice and persistence. These verses encourage us to work diligently, grow in our faith, and strive for excellence in all that we do.
Everything about the spiritual realm is continuous, practical persistence, such as our prayer life indicated in 1 Thessalonians 5:16—prayer without ceasing. That means to practice the art of continuous praying in and out of situations. Practice makes perfect implies that regular exercise or practice of a skill or activity will lead to proficiency or mastery in it. So true!
In certain situations, or skills, there’s no “I already know it all.” Just like in the spiritual, we must keep practicing, not only to get better but to keep sharp as seen in Hebrews 12:11. The practice is what makes the difference and makes us better.
Colossians 3:23 says to do everything as unto God. That means not giving up when it gets tough or tougher. Not losing hope when it looks like it’s not working or meeting the goal.
What are you trying to gain mastery over? Is it a physical thing, a spiritual activity, or just wanting to improve on skills and talents? Whatever it is, if it involves some sort of labour, then keep at it until you achieve it according to James 1:25.
For us to know and remember the scriptures, we must practice a steady Bible reading habit to help us memorize verses and look for ways to daily practice them. The Bible is filled with verses that instruct us on how to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to God.
As Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs, we must “Trust in the Lord with all our heart, and not lean on our own understanding. In all our ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight our paths.” The more we practice listening for and to the voice of the Lord and fully following His commands and instructions, the better we become at recognizing His voice and commands.
Practice makes perfect! The same way we practice everything is the same way we ought to practice our faith. Exercising faith daily by allowing life to lead us is the only way to strengthen our faith as James 2:14-17 puts it: “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” What good is your skill if you don’t know how to use it from lack of practice?
We may get results from occasional practice but not as much as the perfection that comes from extensive practice. Practice whatever you need to; it makes perfect!
PRAYER: Father, thank you for the grace to persistently keep practicing until I gain mastery in those areas that are difficult for me in Jesus’ name, amen.
