THE SPIDER’S WEB!
Job 8:14 TLB
A man without God is trusting in a spider's web. Everything he counts on will collapse.
If someone had told me that spiders or their webs were mentioned in the Bible, I would have either said, “go look again” or searched for myself. But behold, all of God’s creations are mentioned in the Bible.
We all know what a spider’s web looks like and how far they can reach and cover. They can create a slightly scary look and sometimes, in some places, may be a sign of untidiness and uncleanliness. (I swept the other day and, hey, a few days later, there was a fresh web. Where do they come from?) Of course, let’s not forget that anything ghoulish loves to spread man-made spider webs around, like during Halloween. In this instance, the spider’s web is seen as something weak, since it can be easily swiped away. The spider’s web reinforces how a person who performs evil deeds weaves “spiders’ webs” for themselves, not being able to hide their deeds.
Isaiah 59:3-8 recounts the mostly social sins that keep God’s presence away. These sins come naturally and become the web that people shroud their lives with. Our text illustrates the fragility and lack of reliability of trusting in earthly things. Just like a spider’s web can easily be destroyed, putting our trust in temporary and worldly things can lead to disappointment and instability.
Some have used lies as a spider’s web to make their lives what they are not, while ignoring, covering, and exaggerating the reality of their lives to suit their narratives. We all can knit or spin a good story according to Isaiah 59:5 and spread or hang them wherever we want them to be most effective. But sadly, these are as fragile and weak as a spider’s web that breaks under undue pressure.
Every one of God’s creations is intelligent and wise, including the spider. Spiders are deceptive and destructive in nature, like all evildoers. Just as a spider’s web can ensnare its prey, these individuals use cunning tactics and schemes to harm others. It serves as a warning to avoid and be cautious of those who operate with deceit. The enemy uses a spider web of deceit and cunning to ensnare God’s people who are not alert to his tactics.
We see a spider’s web and notice its trapped bugs, weaving them into a false wall of security before destroying them. These bugs were caught unawares because they were not paying attention. Have you ever wondered how they achieve this? God’s creativity and wisdom are not limited to man only. While not directly referencing spiders, Psalm 104:24 celebrates God’s creativity: “How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” The intricate webs woven by spiders reflect the creative genius of God’s design. Just as a spider’s web is a marvel of engineering, the world around us showcases divine creativity. Unfortunately, so many people have turned that creative and divine ability into something negative and evil that can be used against the rest of God’s creation and the earth.
God created us to work, to be resourceful and diligent. This, sadly, is lacking in so many today, yet fully functioning in the spider as seen in diligence and persistence. Spiders are known for their hard work and persistence in weaving intricate webs. This reflects the biblical virtue of diligence and perseverance in our faith and daily lives as described in Proverbs 30:28: “The lizards (spiders or others) are easy to catch, but they are found even in kings’ palaces.” This verse highlights the resourcefulness and determination of spiders, a lesson in using what you must achieve great things. The spider’s web symbolizes the fragility of misplaced trust and false security. If we must spin a spider’s web, we should emulate the spider’s resourcefulness and persistence. Remember that spiders thrive even in palaces.
PRAYER: Lord, I acknowledge the fragility of trusting in earthly things. Teach me to place my trust in You alone, as my firm foundation. Protect me from the webs of deceit and cunning that the enemy may weave around me in Jesus’ name, amen.
