WHO IS STANDING BY YOU?
Numbers 1:2-13 NASB
“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head [3] from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall count them by their armies. [4] With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household. [5] These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; [6] of the tribe of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; [7] of the tribe of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; [8] of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; [9] of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; [10] of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; [11] of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; [12] of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; [13] of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
There are people and there are people! But not everyone is ordained to be within our spaces. There are people who are sailing past us in life, those who’ll support certain events and seasons of our lives, those who’ll provide the resources needed for such times, those that have the wisdom to counsel and guide us, those who know where we’re heading and how to get there, and those who must by God’s design stand by us in spite of the circumstances.
In our text scripture, God orders Moses to take the number of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upwards, and the men that were to assist in this work, one from each tribe, are mentioned by name.
“Those who shall assist you” means that certain people have the grace to help you carry out your Godly assignment and purpose, and not everyone is meant to get involved in your matter. There are names of people according to God’s agenda, assigned to carry out kingdom duty in our lives that must assist us to achieve our goals.
Verse 5 says, “And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you.” They are to be present with Moses and Aaron when numbering the people, not merely as spectators of the affair and inspectors of the accounts, but as assistants in the work. Each man in his tribe, being best acquainted with the families and houses in it; and these men were not chosen by Moses and Aaron, nor by their respective tribes, but were appointed and named by the Lord Himself.
Who is walking alongside you? Who is standing with you? Are you sure that whoever is standing by you is Godly ordained to do so? When you are in certain situations, circumstances, and seasons, do you automatically think of or reach out to particular people? Do certain names pop out to you in specific situations?
Ben E. King’s 1961 chart-topping hit “Stand by Me” spoke to hearts all over the world through its expression of vulnerability and homage to loyal friends. As members of the body of Christ, we’re called to be those “loyal friends” who stand by each other in difficult times. Jesus said it’s not just important; it is an essential sign that we belong to Him.
Standing with those who need support is just caring for other believers, which glorifies our heavenly Father. 1 Corinthians 10:31 shows that glorifying God isn’t just a positive by-product of our righteous actions. It’s a heart attitude that continually exalts the Lord through joy, thanksgiving, and service. Think of times in your life when you’ve experienced this.
When the right people stand with us, their agenda is usually Godly and heaven-based and hardly ever personal, as seen with Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel 18. As Christians and members of the body of Christ, we’re called to be those “loyal friends” who stand by each other in difficult times. Jesus said it’s not just important; it is an essential sign that we belong to Him. To get the most out of this study, read 2 Corinthians 8:1-4 and 2 Corinthians 9:10-15.
Who stands by you in pain, disappointment, sickness, grief, celebration, joy, and everything else when we need people to stand with us? We don’t have to suffer alone, carry the burdens of life alone, laugh alone, or do anything else for that matter alone. God has placed people around us for that. Know their names, appreciate them, and enjoy their presence and contributions to your life.
PRAYER: Father God, help me to recognize those whom you have named to stand by me in any given situation and season and to keep them in my prayers in Jesus’ name.
