CRY ME A RIVER!

Psalm 42:3 NET

I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, “Where is your God?”

Stop crying! Wipe your tears! No need to cry! Crying does not solve anything! Well, the Bible is full of tears—even Jesus wept in John 11:35.

There are crocodile tears, but then there are genuine tears; anything and everything can induce tears—happiness, joy, laughter, pain, disappointment, and more. The scripture covers all kinds of crying and why they occurred, but it’s encouraging that our tears are not wasted in God’s hands, as stated in Psalm 56:8.

Have you experienced the type of despair that induces one to cry all night and all day long? Have you felt the kind of pain that will keep the tears flowing? Sometimes life happens in a way that makes us think God has forsaken us, and we are so terrified that all we can do is cry, like the children of Israel in Psalm 137 who wept in deep sorrow by the river in remembrance of their exile in Babylon, longing for God’s intervention and vengeance.

Why are you crying? Has the Lord forsaken you? He never will, as He says in Hebrews 13:5. Does it feel like you’re forgotten or being ignored? Don’t worry, tears are a part of life! God created us to experience emotions. He hears our cry and sees every tear we shed. There’s always going to be a time for tears, according to Ecclesiastes 3:4.

Crying is the emotional response to situations we face, and it’s okay to cry. Be comforted knowing that God created us to cry. We can’t help our tears, but often crying will help us to be refreshed and even restored, especially as they are temporary, according to Psalm 30:5.

Why stop yourself from having a good cry? Why hide your tears? God sees your tears and hears your cry, says Psalm 34:15, and He will come to your rescue. Tears are good and therapeutic, but there comes a time when they are unnecessary and overdone.

There are all kinds of tears that mean different things, such as:

Basal tears: These constantly secrete tears, with protein-rich antibacterial properties that help keep the eyes moist each time we blink.

Reflex tears: These are triggered by irritants such as wind, smoke, or onions, flushing out irritants and protecting the eyes.

Emotional tears: These are in response to our emotions and contain a higher level of stress hormones than other types of tears.

Crying is soothing; it alleviates pain and gathers support for us, even from the Lord, according to Psalm 18:6. When was the last time you cried? Or are you one who thinks crying is for wimps and babies? The "boys don’t cry" club.

If the Savior of the world wept from compassion and pain, who are you not to cry? The writer says tears became his meat and food because he couldn’t eat from crying out of his need for God. Have you cried out for God yet?

David says in Psalm 145:18-19 that God graciously helps those who cry out to Him and concludes that his tears were not unnoticed, that God was aware of his suffering, records and stores them for memorials that become answered prayers, as recorded in 2 Kings 20:5.

Remember, everyone is different, so it's important to be sensitive to others’ need and preferences. Your support can make a big difference in helping them feel better and stop crying.

Who do you cry to for help? Be mindful of who you cry to, as Job found out in 30:24 that our cry of pain and despair may not necessarily get them to help us. Cry a river if you must but be encouraged and comforted that Luke 6:21b says you are blessed, for you’ll end up with the last laugh.

Cry! God hears and sees your tears.

PRAYER: Lord, grant me the grace and compassion to be sensitive to those around me and help them as I can in their time of need in Jesus’ name, amen.
