DELIVERED FROM EVERYTHING!

Psalm 34:19-22 BSB

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him from them all. [20] He protects all his bones; not one of them will be broken. [21] Evil will slay the wicked, and the haters of the righteous will be condemned. [22] The LORD redeems His servants, and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

Mephalti—the Hebrew for “my deliverer”—is derived from the Hebrew verb “Yasha’,” which means “to deliver, save, or rescue.” The word “deliverer” means “to (cause to) escape; to carry away safely.” The phrase “my deliverer” appears in several Bible references, with 2 Samuel 22:2 being one of the first instances where the Lord is referred to as our deliverer.

The Lord is always rescuing and delivering us from all kinds of perils. If He didn’t, many of us wouldn’t be here today. We wouldn’t know how to defend and help ourselves when days of trouble come. David found the Lord to be a reliable defender against his enemies in Psalm 18:1, and so must we, for no one else can save us from the hands of the enemy.

The Good News Translation of verse nineteen of our text says, “Good people suffer many troubles, but the LORD saves them from them all.” The Lord is constantly stepping in to save us, to deliver us from every attack of the enemy. The side-by-side realities of human persecution and divine preservation vividly depict actual life in the real world.

The elite or very important people have bodyguards to guard, save, defend, and deliver them in dangerous situations, but even they can’t deliver them from the hands and plans of the enemy and all the other afflictions known to humanity. God, and only God—Mephalti, our bodyguard—can deliver us from everything, as He’s been doing from the beginning of time.

God as our deliverer is actively involved in rescuing His people from danger and sin. We should remember and recount His past deliverances as a testimony of His faithfulness. David recognizes God, as we too should, that He (God) is the one who saves us from danger and delivers us from our enemies. This term encapsulates the idea of salvation and liberation, both physically and spiritually. It reflects the broader biblical theme of God as the Redeemer who rescues His people from bondage and oppression. For David, this is not just an experience but an ongoing reality, as he continually relied on God’s deliverance.

Unlike human fathers, God the Father takes the role of rescuing, saving, and providing for His people. This concept is a central theme throughout the Scriptures, reflecting God’s power, faithfulness, and love. The most significant example of the Lord as deliverer is the Exodus, where God delivers the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In Exodus 3:8, God declares, “I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.” The Psalms also frequently refer to God as a Deliverer, with David often calling upon God for deliverance from his enemies.

Psalm 59:1 starts with “Deliver me, O Lord.” Indeed, only the Lord can deliver us from the enemy, from perils, danger, and whatever else comes against us. But it goes further to say, “defend us.” Not only does the Lord deliver us, but He also continues to defend us against principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness. Psalm 55:16–17 says, “I call upon God, and the Lord will deliver me. Morning, noon, and night, I mulled over these things and cried out in my distress, and He heard my voice.”

As great as God is in rescuing us, we must first acknowledge that He is our deliverer and defender all in one, so we must call on Him when we need Him to deliver us. Wherever you are now, in whatever situation, God the Deliverer is willing and able to deliver and defend you.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for being willing and able to deliver me anytime and every time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
