GO TO THE RIGHT PERSON OR SOURCE.
Esther 2:15 AMPC
Now when the turn for Esther the daughter of Abihail, the uncle of Mordecai who had taken her as his own daughter, had come to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's attendant, the keeper of the women, suggested. And Esther won favor in the sight of all who saw her.
There are all kinds of sources for finding out all kinds of information available to those who know where to look. Just as the Bible is a source for believers to know the what, how, when, where, and why of the Christian faith.
When we need health information, we go to a medical centre. For education, we go to a place of learning. In fact, we always automatically go to the best and most often the highest authority for any information we are after. But sadly, in our Christian Walk, we tend to make do with “whatever.”
The Bible offers several verses that emphasize the importance of seeking guidance from the right source, which is ultimately God. We never know who the Lord will use to instruct us apart from His word, as stated in Isaiah 30:21: “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” Although this verse tells us that God will always provide clear direction when we seek His guidance, most often, some of these instructions will come from people around us, especially those with influence on us, such as mentors, family members, or wise friends like Mordecai.
Proverbs 1:5 says, “Let the wise listen and gain instruction, and the discerning acquire wise counsel.” This is not only a biblical principle but one for life that even non-Christian’s practice daily.
“The wise” refers to individuals who are already knowledgeable and understanding yet remain open to further learning and instruction. The call to “listen” implies an active, intentional effort to hear and understand. Listening is a humble acknowledgment that one does not know everything and is open to learning. This is a timeless principle, emphasizing that wisdom is not static but dynamic, requiring continuous growth and openness to God’s guidance.
Hegai was put in charge of the women in the palace and had seen a lot in his time. He had the experience to counsel and lead someone like Esther, who didn’t have the traditional family to learn from. She was quick to apply all she had learned and heard both from her cousin and Hegai to finally fit and take the place of the Queen of Susa.
God is our source! The ultimate source! The only and most reliable source! We must learn to go to Him directly for direction and counsel when we need it, and He in His mercy will direct our path as stated in Proverbs 3:5-6. When we do approach God for answers, direction, and guidance, we must learn to listen to Him. Listening for God’s voice is to be attentive to the ways God might be speaking to us. This could be through a sense of peace, a conviction in your heart, or circumstances aligning in a certain way. Isaiah 30:21 reminds us that God will guide us with His voice. 1 Corinthians 8:6 states it clearly, “Yet for us there is [only] one God, the Father, Who is the Source of all things and for Whom we [have life], and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through and by Whom are all things and through and by Whom we [ourselves exist].”
Esther must have seen or heard Hegai do what he does and the evident results for her to approach him to ask what she can and cannot do to stand out among all the other girls competing for the position of Queen. It would have been foolish for her to ask her competitors, her cousin, or just ignorantly do what she thinks is best.
So many Christians do this. We ignore God, His word, and counsel and either try our best ourselves or seek out those we think should know when we haven’t inquired of the Lord.
For the best and right answer, direction, and help, let’s all endeavour to always go to the right person or source.
PRAYER: Father, help me to always act in faith when seeking anything, may I never be timid but come boldly to you for guidance and direction in Jesus’ name, amen.
