THE FEAR OF THE LORD!

Proverbs 1:7 ESV

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The fear of the Lord is the core truth of the Bible, the foundation of the gospel, and the totality of the Christian Walk. The running theme of the book of Proverbs is the fear of the Lord, and it’s all written as a statement of fact. The “fear of the Lord” is a concept found throughout the Bible, and it carries a deep and multifaceted meaning.

The fear of the Lord involves a profound respect and awe for God’s majesty, power, and holiness. It’s recognizing His greatness and our own smallness in comparison.

The fear of the Lord means reverent obedience to God, the appropriate response to His authority and power. Our search for wisdom and knowledge begins and ends with the fear of the Lord. God takes delight in those who fear Him and have put their trust and hope in Him, according to Psalm 147:11.

The reverential fear of God is a cognitive awareness of what God wants and does, which will effectively keep us from evil and teach us how to apply the principles of the scriptures. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge! Without this fear, every other thing, every other kind of knowledge is made redundant and meaningless. It is the fear of the Lord that increases wisdom and gives understanding, which increases learning, according to Proverbs 9:9-10.

In essence, the fear of the Lord is about having a deep, respectful relationship with God that influences every aspect of our lives. It’s not about being afraid of God in a negative sense, but about honouring Him and living in a way that reflects His character and commands.

When we look at our lives today, at the church, and the whole body of Christ, we realize that the fear of the Lord is seriously lacking. People no longer have reverential fear for God; everyone seems to be mixing God with anything and everything without making Him the focal point of existence. When we look at Job 28:28, we see that the source of true wisdom is God, which seems to be a truth that is largely ignored in our world today.

The world may want to convince us that wisdom comes from learning experiences and reading, but according to Colossians 2:3, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of both true wisdom and true knowledge. The fear of the Lord is the fountain of life, according to Proverbs 14:27, that turns one from the snares of death. In other words, the fear of God offers a fountain that refreshes, cools, beautifies, and gives us life. The fountain of life overrides the source of pain.

When we have the fear of God, the reverential fear of His Majesty, it becomes a fountain of life to us. If we desire to understand God’s wisdom, we must search for it like a precious jewel, according to Proverbs 2:5.

The body of Christ no longer has reverential fear for God. We, like the Israelites of old, are now acting as if there is no God. Sin has become a stronghold in the body of Christ; we have become a people of lukewarmness towards the things of God.

There is so much chaos in the world at large because of the lack of the fear of God. Justice and righteousness are now an anachronism in our society. Stability, the most elusive thing of our generation, can only be found in and through the fear of the Lord that overrides all the negativities in our society now. According to Isaiah 33:6, wisdom and knowledge gained through the fear of the Lord provide stability, strength, and salvation.

Psalm 34:11 invites us to come to the Lord to be taught how to fear the Lord and gain wisdom and knowledge to achieve a good life.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to remember that though you are my father, you are king and sovereign of the universe, my I reverently honour you always in Jesus’ name, amen.
