LOYALTY!

 Proverbs 17:17 MSG

Friends love through all kinds of weather, and families stick together in all kinds of trouble.

Loyalty is the strong feeling of support or allegiance exhibited in a relationship. It is synonymous with faithfulness, constancy, devotion, and commitment to God, people, and a cause. It’s when we exhibit trustworthiness in a relationship, honest dependability, and reliability.

Loyalty has a face and a look because it’s something that can be seen in people—in their actions, words, and character. Are you a loyal person? We all expect people to be loyal to us, but are we loyal to others? Loyalty comes in degrees. We can be loyal to people for any number of reasons—spiritual, financial, material, familial, and many more. We can be more loyal to some people than others and to certain issues and matters more than others.

We talk about customer loyalty, brand loyalty, and more. How loyal are you? Are we loyal to those we should be? Or are we quick to jump ship when things don’t benefit us? Being a loyal person means we have the quality of unswerving allegiance to people or projects regardless of what it costs us.

Do you have any loyal people in your corner? The psalmist in Psalm 119:113 says he hates those with a divided mind. Double-mindedness is not part of loyalty! Elijah used a strong word in 1 Kings 18:21 for those who are not loyal—“limping.” These are people who should be devoted to God or friends but have allowed their loyalties to be divided.

We have all experienced, and may still be experiencing, friends who jump from one thing or relationship to another, playing with others’ emotions while trying to convince us of their loyalty. “I’ve got your back, I’ll support you, do anything for you, you can trust/count on me.” Sounds familiar? Yes! You’ve either said it or heard it. But when the crunch comes, they limp between what is convenient and beneficial for them and what you need from them as a loyal person.

Loyalty is an attribute we all desire in others but sadly, not all can return according to Proverbs 19:22. Loyalty is greater than wealth and riches. We all want a loyal person around us. A loyal person is one whom you may argue with, but when you apologize, you find a way to forgive and move on with the friendship. When we’re at fault, we shouldn’t hesitate to give constructive criticism. And when they correct you, they do so in love.

We stop being friends with someone because they have nothing to offer anymore. Professing Christians become unbelievers because their circumstances changed, or someone did something and they hold God accountable for a man’s action. We see friends change loyalty when divorce happens; people who were friends of the couple now choose sides and whom to remain loyal to.

Serving two masters is what Jesus called loyalty in Matthew 6:24. Too many people have divided loyalty between God and work, God and bank account or needs, or God and family. Jesus says it is impossible; we must give one thing or person exclusivity. Our loyalty is expressed in our commitment to God, friends, and things.

A loyal friend is always there. A good and loyal friend is priceless! Not only for benefits. We must emulate our savior Jesus as he declares his loyalty to us in Matthew 28:20b, that even when we fail to be completely loyal to him, we are assured that He will be loyal to us, saying that he is with us, loyal to us to the end of the ages.

Can you imitate Christ and be loyal to your friends, families, and especially to the Lord? He too declares His loyalty to us in Deuteronomy 7:9, saying He established the essence of loyalty through His covenant relationship with His people. Be a loyal person!

PRAYER: Lord God, help me to remain unwaivering and steadfast in exhibiting loyalty to the right people and course in Jesus’ name, amen.
