A HEART POSTURE!
Romans 10:10 TLB
For it is by believing in his heart that a man becomes right with God; and with his mouth he tells others of his faith, confirming his salvation.
The concept of heart posture is a central theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the significance of one's inner attitude and disposition toward God and others. In Scripture, the heart is often seen as the seat of emotions, intentions, and moral character, making its posture crucial in the life of a believer.
Our faith is closely linked to heart posture. The text highlights that belief and justification before God originate from the heart, indicating that a proper heart posture is essential for genuine faith.
Whatever we conceive in the heart influences what we do, say, and become. Proverbs 4:23 advises, "Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life," underscoring the heart's role as the source of one's actions and life choices. This suggests that a proper heart posture is essential for righteous living.
John 4:23-24 states, "A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." Here, worship is not merely about external rituals but involves a sincere and truthful heart.
Looking at the lyrics of some of the songs we sing should remind us that our hearts must be connected to our words and actions in reverence and honour of the Lord. The posture of our heart is the expression of our worship and reverence:
- "We bow down and worship Yahweh" by David G
- "Bow down and worship Him, worship Him, oh, worship Him" by Bishop Paul Morton
- "All to Jesus, I surrender, all to Him, I freely give" by Don Moen
These are just a few of our popular worship songs. How can we surrender all to Jesus without giving Him our heart and everything else?
There must be something William McDowell understands about heart posture for him to write and sing, "I surrender all to you, everything I give to you, withholding nothing." Truly, we cannot worship God or surrender all to Him without giving Him our hearts completely.
The irreverence for God, even among believers, is alarming. People who claim to fear and honour God often stand with hands in their pockets, arms folded, or in a plainly bored manner while the worship of this great and mighty God is going on. Some even use worship time for whispering, gossiping, or catching up because their hearts are not positioned on the Lord. Even when songs call for actions like kneeling, bowing, or lifting hands, we sometimes fail to act because, in our hearts, it’s just a song.
If we are to worship the Lord in spirit and truth, we must have a heart posture that is totally surrendered to Him.
Heart posture goes hand-in-hand with obedience. Obedience to God's commandments is deeply tied to the heart's posture. Deuteronomy 6:5 commands, "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." This call for wholehearted devotion indicates that true obedience stems from a heart fully committed to God.
What and how is your heart posture reflecting?
Is your heart positioned on the Lord?
Our heart posture helps us recognize how our hearts connect with God. A heart dedicated to God creates a pathway for His love and grace to flow into our lives and into the lives of others. It draws us closer to Him and allows us to experience His presence fully.
PRAYER: Create in me a clean and new heart Lord that is pure and set on you alone, help me to guide it diligently in Jesus’ name, amen.
