FEAR IS A LIAR!

2 Timothy 1:7 AMPC

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.


The biggest liar in life is fear! Franklin Roosevelt once said, “There’s nothing to fear but fear itself.” According to the Bible, fear is a liar—FALSE EVIDENCE APPEARING REAL.

Fear is a natural emotional response to a perceived threat to one’s security or well-being. Its intensity can range from anxious worry to utter terror. At times, fear can be beneficial, prompting caution and actions that safeguard us. However, fear becomes a hindrance when it is rooted in delusion, lingers indefinitely, and overpowers positive emotions like love and joy. This kind of fear can disrupt normal life and rob us of fulfilment.

Fear is more than an emotion—it is bondage and a spirit. Yet, God assures us that He has not given us a spirit of fear but a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. The spirit of power enables us to work miracles, confound enemies, endure trials, and live righteously. The spirit of love allows us to hope, believe, and persevere through all circumstances. The spirit of a sound mind brings self-control, clear understanding, sound judgment, and inner harmony as we are guided by the Spirit of God.

The enemy uses fear to stifle our praise, but Psalm 34:4 reminds us that God will deliver us from all our fears, including the fear of violence, uncertainty, or anything else that oppresses us.

Many are trapped in fear exacerbated by the constant consumption of toxic media. Fear magnifies life’s challenges, making social, financial, and other problems appear insurmountable. However, fear can serve a purpose—it can teach us courage. Joshua, for instance, would not have truly understood courage had he never experienced fear. His encounters with fear shaped his character and deepened his reliance on God (Joshua 1:9).

Fear, as the Bible states, is a tormenting spirit sent by the enemy, who, according to John 10:10, comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. Fear has the power to steal the miracles God wants to perform in and through us. Peter’s fear, in Matthew 14:24-31, caused him to miss a miraculous moment when he began to doubt.

When fear takes over, it disrupts the balance of our minds. James 1:6-8 warns that a double-minded person, walking in both fear and doubt, is unstable and unable to receive from God. This instability is exactly what the spirit of fear seeks to create—causing us to waver, doubt God’s promises, and live in uncertainty.

While fear feels real, it is not the ultimate truth. Whatever we fear is subject to the name of Jesus and the power of God’s word. Fear becomes destructive when it stops us from doing what we ought to do. It can dominate our lives through anxiety, procrastination, and addictions. But we are not meant to live in fear.

Fear is outnumbered three-to-one by God’s gifts: power, love, and a sound mind. Let the perfect love of God, described in 1 John 4:18, cast out every fear. Throughout the Bible, the Lord repeatedly commands us, “Do not fear.” So, do not let the fear of something happening stop you from stepping into what God has for you.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to remember to always operate in love to over-power fear and not allow it to over-power me in Jesus’ name, amen.
