PERSEVERANCE!
Philippians 1:6 BSB
being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you
will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Perseverance is the ability to see problems or situations
through to the end, despite the difficulties encountered along the way. It is
the ability not to let challenges cloud our judgment to the point of
overlooking God and allowing problems to appear bigger than He is.
Isaiah 46:10 declares that the Lord knows the end from the
beginning. This means that whenever something begins in our lives—a challenge,
difficulty, or problem—God is already aware of it and has His ways of handling
it faithfully until it ends favourably.
Perseverance is not difficult when everything is working
right and going our way. It’s when we encounter roadblocks to resolving
challenges that we need the strength and grace to persevere. The Bible
repeatedly tells us that perseverance, though not always enjoyable, is
necessary for our lives. As Romans 5:3-4 teaches, perseverance builds character
and hope. In fact, the Bible commands us to stay where the Lord places us and
to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” as stated in Hebrews 12:1.
We cannot achieve anything of lasting value without perseverance.
Some challenges will test our perseverance and strength, but
we must hold firmly to God’s word through these trials. He, who has done great
things in our lives, is faithful to see us through and complete whatever He
starts.
Abram exemplified perseverance in trusting God’s promises.
His trust was marked by his willingness to act on God’s instructions before
seeing the promises fulfilled. As described in Genesis 17:1-2, 19: “When Abram
was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am El-Shaddai—
‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a
covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless
descendants.’...But God replied, ‘No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son
for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and
his descendants as an everlasting covenant.’
Perseverance is not a punishment and is not reserved for a
select few. It is for everyone. We need perseverance to learn and master
anything in life. 2 Corinthians 11:23-29 recounts how Paul persevered through
innumerable trials in God’s service. Yet, even as Paul endured, he humbly
refrained from boasting about his perseverance, setting an example for us.
What trials are you facing today? Are you wondering if you
have the strength to hold on? Ask the Lord for the strength to persevere in
prayer and worship. With God’s power and grace, you can withstand the pressure
and endure to the end, as 1 Peter 2:20 assures us. You are not alone. Psalm
23:4 reminds us that God walks with us through every valley.
Your outlook on life determines how you perceive your
challenges. If you see them merely as nuisances, you may develop bitterness,
cynicism, and hopelessness, leading you to give up. But if you view your
problems as opportunities to strengthen your character and convictions—as
explained in James 1:2-4—you can rise above them and persevere to see the good
things God has in store for you. Endurance is a sign of growing, vibrant faith.
As 2 Timothy 2:3 says, “Endure suffering along with me, as a
good soldier of Christ Jesus.”
PRAYER: Lord, may I faithfully remain in you to the end, and you
in me as I trustingly
hold fast to your word and promises so that I will always produce much fruit in
Jesus’ name, amen.
