SEE GOD EVEN IN THE DARK!
Daniel 2:17-23 GNT
Then Daniel went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael,
and Azariah what had happened. [18] He told them to pray to the God of heaven
for mercy and to ask him to explain the mystery to them so that they would not
be killed along with the other advisers in Babylon. [19] Then that same night
the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision, and he praised the God of
heaven: [20] "God is wise and powerful! Praise him forever and ever. [21]
He controls the times and the seasons; he makes and unmakes kings; it is he who
gives wisdom and understanding. [22] He reveals things that are deep and
secret; he knows what is hidden in darkness, and he himself is surrounded by
light. [23] I praise you and honor you, God of my ancestors. You have given me
wisdom and strength; you have answered my prayer and shown us what to tell the
king."
Even with light all around, so many people still grope and
stumble. How much more in the dark, where no one can see clearly! Light
overshadows everything, even darkness itself. No matter how good your eyesight,
you feel like a blind person in the dark, but even the flicker of a candle can
restore sight, partially or fully.
God is light, as declared in 1 John 1:5. This light
symbolizes God’s knowledge and purity. It is the only light that helps us see
in the darkness. No matter how dense the darkness, God's light shines through.
The word of God is the light that gives us knowledge—the knowledge that brings
wisdom and revelation. As Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of His word giveth
light and understanding to the simple.”
Many may not realize it, but we all have two sets of eyes:
the physical eyes with which we see and appreciate the world around us, and the
spiritual eyes with which we perceive the things of the Spirit, enabling us to
see even in the darkest moments. During the day, when it is light, every
challenge seems smaller, but once night falls, fears and worries often flood
in.
However, there is nothing inherently fearful in the dark—God
can use the dark to teach us profound lessons. There are truths we can only
learn in the dark, as Daniel did. Sometimes, what is hidden in the dark can
only be revealed there. Consider Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, which he refused to
share with his counsellors. To save their lives, Daniel sought the Lord in the
dark, as Matthew 10:27 says, to reveal what was hidden. Only then, in a night
vision, did God reveal the secret to Daniel. Whether Daniel dreamed the same
dream, was inspired by God, or received a vision, the knowledge was divine. It
is humanly impossible to narrate someone else’s dream unless they recount it
first.
God often uses the dark to capture our undivided attention,
teaching us deep truths about Him. Ephesians 5:13 reminds us that everything is
exposed and made visible by the light of God. Nothing can remain hidden once
His light shines. Yet today, many believe they can cloak their actions in
darkness to avoid being seen. But God sees all and reveals His truth to those
who ask and seek Him.
1 Thessalonians 5:5 calls us children of light and day, not of
darkness and night. As God's children, we enjoy His light and life. He reveals
things others cannot understand and imparts understanding that no earthly
teacher can give. When our eyes are illuminated, we no longer walk blindly,
trapped in ignorance and prejudice. The light of God enlightens both our minds
and spirits.
In verse 22 of Daniel declares that God reveals deep and secret
things, for He alone knows what is in the darkness. His light overshadows the
darkness, allowing us to see hidden truths visible only through spiritual
sight.
Sinners, however, hate the light. They are enemies of
knowledge, preferring the cover of darkness to avoid accountability. Their
deeds, blinded by sin, cannot withstand the light. They continue in spiritual
darkness because they have not welcomed the light of God into their spirits.
Choose to see God, even in the dark. Let His light shine— “Let
there be light!”
PRAYER: Dear Lord, open the eyes of my heart and my physical
eyes, that I may see how you see and what you want me to see all the time in
Jesus’ name, amen.
