SPIRITUAL ALTAR!
Exodus 20:24 (AMP)
An altar of earth you shall make to Me and sacrifice on it
your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In
every place where I record My name and cause it to be remembered I will come to
you and bless you.
An altar is usually a structure on which prayers or
sacrifices are offered to a deity for religious purposes or to commemorate
significant events. Spiritually, an altar can be either good or bad, positive
or negative, godly or ungodly.
- An altar is a body, a temple:1 Corinthians 6:19 calls our
bodies the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- A place of sacrifice, worship, and consecration.
- A meeting point between human and spirit beings.
- A place where covenants and vows are made.
- A gateway into the spiritual realm: It serves as a
spiritual highway for angelic or demonic traffic. As noted in Genesis 28:16-18,
when men raise a righteous altar to the Lord, it becomes a gateway to heaven.
God never despises the incense from a righteous altar as seen in Genesis
28:24-25.
Every believer should have a designated spiritual altar in
their homes—a space for worship and prayer where they regularly meet with the
Lord. At the same time, their lives should reflect a living altar to the Lord.
Personal altars can also serve as symbolic reminders of Romans 12:1, which
calls us to "present your bodies as a living sacrifice." On a deeper
level, the altar within us is where the flesh and spirit battle. When we
surrender parts of ourselves to God, we symbolically lay them on this inner altar,
allowing Him to take control.
The Bible references over 400 altars. These varied in
form—some were stone piles, others table-like structures. The first recorded
altar was built by Noah, who offered burnt offerings to the Lord after the
flood as seen in Genesis 8:20. Before the Law of Moses, altars were built
wherever people encountered God, using available materials, as seen in 1
Chronicles 21:26 and Judges 6:24.
One of the most dramatic accounts of an altar is the contest
in 1 Kings 18:20-40, where Elijah demonstrated the power of the living God
against the prophets of Baal. This illustrates the transformative power of
altars—they can bless or curse, depending on the spirits invoked, as described
in Numbers 23:1-30. Their significance often extends across generations.
It is crucial to continually “service” our spiritual altars
to ensure the fire never dims or dies. Our praise and worship, presented from a
holy altar, act as sweet incense that God receives with delight. Heavenly
blessings and favour are obtained by maintaining a righteous offering on our
altars.
Altars open unseen doors in the spiritual realm. As gateways,
they attract spiritual traffic based on who constructs and services them.
Altars create spiritual highways—be it the gates of hell according to Matthew
16:18 or the gates of heaven mentioned in Genesis 28:12-16.
Altars serve as instruments of legislation, empowering us to
bind and release captives. The effectiveness of this spiritual legislation
depends on the purity and sanctity of the altar. To experience greater
spiritual victory, believers should establish territorial altars of prayer,
praise, and declarations.
Do you have an altar? Ask the Lord which areas of your life
He is asking you to surrender. Symbolically lay these areas on the altar and
let go, trusting in His plan. Only a spiritually alive person can raise an
effective altar. When God speaks to you about altars, it’s often an invitation
to enter a fresh covenant with Him. Build an altar to the Lord, and let His
presence transform your life!
PRAYER: Father, I present by body as a living altar for your
glory, even as I prayerfully invoke the spiritual altar of prayer in my life in
Jesus’ name, amen.
