THE PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE!
Proverbs 18:15 AMPC
The mind of the prudent is ever getting knowledge, and
the ear of the wise is ever seeking (inquiring for and craving) knowledge.
Everyone in life is pursuing something. What are you
pursuing? In the Bible, knowledge refers to understanding, recognition, or
awareness. Hosea warns that a lack of knowledge leads to destruction, but the
excessive pursuit of knowledge—especially knowledge apart from God—is a
concern. The Bible clearly states that the knowledge of God is the most
valuable knowledge we can possess in Proverbs 2:5. This knowledge is not merely
theoretical or factual; it involves experiencing the reality of God in our
lives according to Philippians 3:10. Jeremiah 22:15-16 reminds us to live in a
way that honours and respects God's power and majesty—not merely through
knowledge gleaned from human sources.
Being aware of God’s existence is not enough. True
knowledge of God must include a deep appreciation for a relationship with Him.
Today, countless self-help books promise wisdom on nearly every topic. However,
Ecclesiastes 12:12 warns that not all books are beneficial, yet many believers
rely on them while neglecting the godly wisdom found in scripture. Reading and
writing books is not wrong, but we must remember, as Proverbs 2:6 teaches, that
God is the ultimate source of wisdom.
The Apostle Paul accomplished extraordinary things for
God. Despite suffering beatings, imprisonment, shipwrecks, and persecution, he
was inspired by God to write much of the New Testament. His experiential
knowledge of Christ, gained through his encounter with Jesus, made the gospel
alive to him. Paul's life demonstrates that no person can know everything. As 1
Corinthians 13:9 states, God reveals only what is needed for the moment.
Knowledge is a lifelong pursuit, not an instant acquisition.
We must continually seek knowledge—especially from
God—because fresh revelation and anointing flow from His throne. Like the deer
in Psalm 42:1, we should thirst for knowledge of the Lord, who supplies all we
need. Human knowledge, apart from God, is flawed and worthless unless tempered
by love (1 Corinthians 13:2). The vastness of God's knowledge and creative
power is continually displayed in His creation as seen in Romans 1:19-20. His
knowledge is infinite, absolute, and contains everything we need for life.
Why is learning so important? Proverbs 1:4 tells us
that gaining knowledge makes the simple wise and gives purpose to young people.
True knowledge leads to purpose. When we grow in knowledge of Jesus, our life's
purpose shifts. If you are struggling to find meaning, spend time studying
God's Word—He will reveal His purpose to you. Proverbs 2:10 declares that
wisdom will enter your heart and knowledge will fill you with joy. Using the
wisdom God provides helps us avoid many wrong paths.
Knowledge is intentional, not accidental. It is
something we must actively pursue. While our DNA may predispose us to certain
traits, we have a role to play in shaping our future. However, human knowledge
alone tends to breed pride according to 1 Corinthians 8:1. Pursuing knowledge
for its own sake, without seeking God, is foolishness. Growing in our knowledge
of God should not be a casual pursuit—it must be a consuming passion.
God has deposited something within each of us, but we
must act upon it. It is the truth we know that sets us free. Do not perish for
lack of knowledge. Pursue godly knowledge above all else. Knowledge is
power—but knowledge in God is life-changing!
PRAYER: Guide us, O Lord, in every step of our
journey. Let our pursuit of knowledge bring us into a deeper relationship with
You, and may it reflect Your light in all that we do. In Jesus’ mighty name, we
pray. Amen.
