TAKE ME DEEPER, LORD!
Luke 5:4-5 TLB
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Now go
out where it is deeper and let down your nets and you will catch a lot of
fish!" [5] "Sir," Simon replied, "we worked hard all last
night and didn't catch a thing. But if you say so, we'll try again."
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself where you truly stand
in Christ? What is your spiritual position? Are you content staying in the
shallow end of your faith, just paddling around in the basics of religion, or
are you hungry for the deeper, richer experience of walking with God in spirit
and truth?
Just like learning to swim, everyone starts out in the
shallow end. It feels safe because you can touch the bottom, stay close to the
edge, and remain in your comfort zone. But staying too long in the shallow
water means you miss out on the fullness and excitement that the deep end
offers. Spiritually, many believers remain “shallow,” satisfied with
surface-level Christianity, letting others do the heavy lifting of faith, and
missing out on the deeper truths and blessings God has prepared for those who go
further.
But Jesus calls us, just as He called Peter, to “launch out
into the deep” (Luke 5:4). He challenges us to step away from the familiar and
comfortable, and to trust Him as He leads us into deeper waters—places where
our feet can no longer touch the bottom, where we must rely on Him completely.
-Deeper waters are where true spiritual growth happens. But
why go deeper?
Paul described
immature believers as those who are content with “milk” and not yet ready for
“solid food” (1 Corinthians 3:2). Remaining in shallow waters limits our
understanding and experience of God.
-God reveals His secrets and treasures in the deep.
1 Corinthians 2:10
says, “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” Some
spiritual truths and blessings can only be discovered when we allow the Holy
Spirit to guide us deeper.
-The fullness of God is found in the deep.
Ephesians 3:18-19
speaks of knowing the breadth, length, depth, and height of Christ’s love, and
being filled with all the fullness of God. This requires a willingness to leave
the shallow behind.
- Going deeper requires surrender and transformation.
Galatians 5:24 reminds
us that those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh. To experience the
depths of God, we must let go of old habits, comfort zones, and fleshly
desires, allowing God to transform us from the inside out.
Peter was an expert fisherman, yet when Jesus told him to go
into deeper water and let down his nets, Peter obeyed—even though it went
against his experience and logic. The result was a miraculous, net-breaking
catch (Luke 5:5-6). Sometimes, God’s greatest blessings and miracles are
waiting for us just beyond our comfort zone, in the deep places where we trust
Him fully.
Relaxing our spiritual guard and refusing to move deeper can
be dangerous. When we stay in the shallow, we become vulnerable to spiritual
stagnation and attacks from the enemy. Psalm 107:23-24 reminds us that those
who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters, see the works
of the Lord and His wonders in the deep.
Is God calling you to deeper waters today? Are you willing to
leave behind the old, familiar, and comfortable for a greater experience of His
presence, power, and purpose? The Christian Walk was never meant to be
storm-free, but it is in the storms and deep waters that we truly encounter
God’s greatness and faithfulness.
All the water in the world cannot sink a boat unless it gets
inside. In the same way, the storms of life cannot destroy you if you are
anchored in Christ and willing to let Him take you deeper.
How to Go Deeper:
- Hunger for more of God—don’t settle for surface-level
faith.
- Spend time in the Word and prayer, seeking the Holy
Spirit’s guidance.
- Step out in faith, even when it feels uncomfortable or
unfamiliar.
- Surrender your comfort zones, fears, and self-reliance.
- Pursue deeper worship, deeper study, deeper obedience, and
deeper love.
Let your prayer be: “Take me deeper, Lord!”
PRAYER: Father, I know you are calling me to go deeper. I ask
for the grace, strength, and opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and
keep going deeper in spiritual things through Christ my Lord. Help me to trust
You more, to seek Your face, and to experience the fullness of Your presence
and power in every area of my life. Take me deeper, Lord, and let my life
reveal Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
