DIVINE VISION!
Jeremiah 1:1-11 NASB
The words of Jeremiah the
son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,
[2] to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon,
king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. [3] It came also in the
days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the
eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the exile of
Jerusalem in the fifth month. [4] Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
[5] “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I
consecrated you; I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” [6] Then I
said, “Oh, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, Because I am a youth.”
[7] But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ Because everywhere I
send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak. [8] “Do
not be afraid of them, For I am with you to save you,” declares the Lord. [9]
Then the Lord stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to
me, “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. [10] “See, I have appointed you
this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to tear down,
To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant.” [11] And the word of the
Lord came to me, saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a
branch of an almond tree.”
Vision—at least godly and
good vision—is very important in life. When we have vision, we see everything
in proper perspective. Are you a person with vision, or are you
visionless?
What do you see? Divine
vision is seeing what the Lord is seeing and not focusing on the carnal
projections of our natural and physical environment.
The Lord has divine vision
for us all, both collectively and individually. Vision is probably the most
used word in every sector of life; unfortunately, it's often used as an excuse
to violate God's authority.
The fact that one has eyes
does not necessarily mean they can see properly or that they have vision.
Elijah confirms this in 2 Kings 6:17, when he prayed that the Lord would open
his servant’s eyes and let him see! The Lord opened his servant’s eyes, and
when he looked up, he saw the vision before them.
God created us to be people
of vision, but we must have a godly vision for ourselves as well—for our
families, businesses, and the church—if we don’t want circumstances,
challenges, and difficulties directing our lives.
God asked Jeremiah what he saw,
and, in response, the Lord said he had seen well (verse 11). The Lord is asking
us, what do you see? Are you seeing what the Lord sees? Are you seeing beyond
your circumstances and seeing the potentials in God’s word? Are you seeing the
love of the Father or His delay in helping you?
According to Habakkuk 2:2,
we must carefully note down our visions, whatever they are, so that we can
pursue them until they materialize.
Divine vision is not limited
to prophetic revelation in the Bible but also refers to the prophetic function
of receiving and delivering the word of God. Proverbs 29:18 tells us that
without divine vision, we will stumble.
The world has programmed us
to see the needs, faults, lack, suffering, wickedness, and evil, but when we
see through the Scriptures and God’s eyes, we see what and how He sees. We
begin to act, think, speak, and live differently, as stated in Psalm 119:82.
We must learn to see God’s
promises and not the problems.
James 1:17 says every good
gift comes from the Father—including that career, ministry, family, wife,
husband, children, good health, and whatever else you’re envisioning—and
Proverbs 29:18 states clearly the importance of vision: “Where there is no
vision, the people perish.” Vision refers to prophetic revelation, the divine
gift of prophecy intended to be a guiding influence in the life of God’s
people. But whatever you are seeing must be aligned with the Scriptures and the
belief that God’s vision for you is your vision.
If you don’t dream it and
have no vision of it, you won’t see it. If you don’t see it through the eyes of
God, it will not come true. Don’t be in self-denial about your ability to bring
your vision to pass without God. Self-denial, which fools will not endure, is
essential to success according to Proverbs 13:19.
Some have such spiritually
pessimistic attitudes that they don’t even bother dreaming—you must see
yourself as God sees you, not as the world does or how you’ve programmed
yourself to see you. In Judges 6:12-14, God saw Gideon as a hero, but Gideon
saw a weak man in himself.
What do you see?
When you align your vision
with God’s and dwell on the Scriptures, it helps position you and gives you the
advantage of seeing better and farther than others. Allow your focus and your
sight to be set on God’s gifts and the positives, not on the negatives, because
what and how you think is what and how you dream declares Philippians 4:8.
What do you see? As we draw
to the close of the year, what do you see for the coming year?
Whatever your visions are,
whatever your thoughts are, the Lord is saying to you: “you have seen well;
He’ll bring His word to pass,” according to verse 12.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Is it necessary to have
spiritual vision to receive God’s blessings? How do you then explain Isaiah
6:10?
- Do you think having a
strong vision of Christ sustains us in crisis?
- Does God still speak in
visions? Do you know how He communicates with you individually?
- What do you see? What God
sees, or what circumstances and situations demand you see?
PRAYER: Lord, grant me the
vision to see how and what you see, knowing that you will watch over your word
until it manifests in Jesus’ name. Amen.
