PIDGIN ASK NOT FOR KING!

1 Samuel 8:4-22

So all di leaders for Israel gada go meet Samuel for Rama 5kon tell am, “Si, yu don old and yor shidren nor dey do as yu dey do. So make yu choose king wey go lead us, just as all di oda nashons get.”

6But Samuel nor like wetin dem ask for, bikos dem sey, “Give us king wey go lead us.” So Samuel kon pray to God. 7God tell Samuel, “Make yu do evritin wey di pipol ask yu, bikos nor bi yu dem rijet, but na mi dem rijet as dia king. 8Since I take dem komot Egypt kon rish today, na so dem dey rijet mi. Dem rijet mi kon dey serve difren gods. Na di same tin dem dey do to yu naw. 9So naw, make yu do as I tok. But make yu warn dem well-well kon make dem know evritin about how di king go rule dem.”

10So Samuel tell di pipol wey dey ask for king evritin wey God don tok. 11E sey, “E get di way di king go take rule una; e go turn una shidren to sojas; some of dem go bi savant for en shariot and odas go dey run follow di horse.

12“Na only en go choose leaders wey go dey look ova tazon and doz wey go dey look ova fifty, plus doz wey go dey klear en field kon harvest wetin e plant and dem go dey make en war materials for am. 13Una dotas go make pomade, kook and bake for di king. 14E go take una best field and vineyard kon give dem to en own savants. 15One part out of evry ten seed and food wey una harvest, e go kollect am go give en ofisas and savants. 16Una man and woman savant, plus una best animals, di king go take and use dem for ensef. 17E go take one out of evry ten animals wey una get and unasef go bi en savants. 18For dat day, una go kry, bikos of una king wey una take una hand choose, but God nor go ansa una.”

19But di pipol still sey dem wont king. Dem nor gri listin to di warnin wey Samuel dey give dem. 20Dem dey sey, “Wi won bi like oda nashons. Awa king go judge and lead us and e go fight awa fight.”

21So Samuel listin to all wetin di pipol dey tok kon go tell God. 22God tell Samuel, “Go do as dem tok and make yu give dem king wey go rule dem.”

Den Samuel tell di men for Israel, “Make all of una dey go back to una house.” 

 

You dey ask the Lord for something wey you think say you need, but Lord sabi say you no really need am? How you go sabi wetin Lord no want make you get? Why you dey ask for wetin you dey ask? The Israelites ask for king, but na no be wetin Lord want for dem. 

Verse four start say "finally," mean say something don reach end or after long wait. E show say something don finish or finally happen, like the Israelites don dey want king for long time. 

1 John 5:14 talk say if we dey ask according to God own will, e go hear us. We gots sabi say our request no suppose against God plan; e dey hear those wey dey do wetin please am, and e show say request wey dey His plan. 

Sad story be say, many times, things we dey ask for no be God will for us. From story wey dey this text, king no be God plan for Israel. 

People ask say make dem get king "like other nations," Samuel no like am and God see am as dem reject am as their King. God warn say king go spoil dem, go carry sons and daughters serve am, go take all their best land and food for himself. But even God allow dem to get king, e mean dem reject God kingship. That choice get wahala cos kings fit oppress dem, and later dem dey cry God make e rescue dem from kings. 

Wetin you dey ask God for? Na wetin God want for you? 

God plan for us for Jeremiah 29:11 be to do beta for us, give us hope and future—things we fit lose if we do wetin we want. 

Why you want wetin you dey want? Israelites want king to dey "like other nations." Na same your want? You dey want be like others? To get wetin dem get? 

Some people ask God for "king" and miss many beta tins God get for dem. You sure you really need wetin you dey ask? 

Sometimes, we dey ask for things because we no trust God. Israelites fear cos Samuel pikin them no dey do well. Instead to trust God, dem ask for king who go give them "security." Dem shift their trust from God to king. 

Dem think cos Samuel no dey help them well, king go fit help dem. 

We too dey do am every day. James 4:3 talk say many times we dey ask God with wrong mind, selfish want, or to satisfy pleasure, no dey align with God will. E say, "You dey ask but no dey get, because your motive wrong, you just wan enjoy am." 

This relate to Israel king request cos dem no ask for God plan, dem ask cos dem want be like others, want human king to rely on, reject God direct kingship. Dem want come from fear, impatience, and no trust God, instead of faith and obey God. 

Their ask get sin inside—asking for things against God best will. James talk say God no dey give selfish or wrong mind request. Same as God reject Israel king cos dem reject Him as Lord. E show say we gots align our desire and request with God will, get humility and trust, no make selfish or worldly pressure control us. 

REFLECTION QUESTIONS 

- When I dey ask God something, I dey look for His will first, or na my own fear and want dey make me ask? 

- How I fit learn to trust God timing and provision, no go handle things by myself? 

- E get parts for my life wey I dey reject God leadership and try control? 

- Wetin I fit do to make my prayer and request jell well with God plan? 

PRAYER: Papa God, thank You for Your love and wisdom. Abeg help me come to You with clean heart, find Your will pass my own desire. Teach me make I pray according Your purpose, no ask for selfish or wrong thing, and make I dey patient wait Your perfect answer, for Jesus name, Amen.
