PIDGIN DUST TO DUST!
Genesis 3:19 “u go sweat before yu chop, until di day wey yu go die go back to groun, where I from kreate yu.”
Ash Wednesday! Everything
inside me dey push me to write about this. But where person go start from? Na
theology, or na scriptural doctrine? Where e start from? Wetin e mean? So many
questions dey.
“You be dust, and unto dust
you go return.” Those old words no be to crush person but to wake person up.
Ash Wednesday dey stand for the door of Lent and e dey remind us of two things:
life dey fragile, but God mercy strong pass our weakness.
You don ever go Ash
Wednesday service before? Wetin e mean to you that time?
Bible no call this day by
name, but the theme — dust, ashes, repentance, and returning — dey run through
the whole story of God people. From when God first form man from ground and
breathe life into am, we don dey live for this balance: we be dust, but that
dust carry God breath inside. Sin dey always try drag us go down to the ground,
but grace dey lift our face up again.
Joel 2:12–13 talk say,
“Return to Me with all una heart… tear una heart, no be una cloth.” This
scripture na the one people dey quote well-well for Ash Wednesday, because e
show say God want inward repentance pass outward display.
Job 42:6 add say, “I repent
in dust and ashes.” Job humility and clear understanding about God reflect the
true posture of Ash Wednesday.
That ash wey dem put for
forehead no be performance — e be confession. E remind us of Job wey sit down
for dust and ashes when he finally see God clearly. E remind us of Nineveh wey
drop their pride and turn to mercy. E remind us of Joel cry say, God want heart
wey break open in repentance, no be garment wey tear to show-off. The outward
symbol only get meaning when e come from true inner turning.
Jesus already assume say Him
followers go fast, but He warn make we no turn am to show. Lent no be
competition of holiness; na moment where God wan meet you quietly where nobody
dey look. Na time to remember say you no fit save yourself — Christ don already
do the saving (Matthew 4:1–11).
These forty days na journey
wey follow the path Jesus take for wilderness. Where Adam fall and Israel
wander, Jesus stand strong. Lent no be about tightening your jaw and doing
better by yourself; na chance to lean on the One wey don already walk that same
road and win the victory for you.
Ash Wednesday dey remind us
of mortality, hope, and resurrection. Psalm 103:14 talk say, “For He knows our
frame; He remember say we be dust.” This na soft reminder of how God understand
our weakness and still show us compassion.
Ash Wednesday na moment of
truth. Maybe you come with sin wey you dey excuse, heart wey don tire,
relationship wey dey shake, or you just dey realise say you don slowly drift
from God. No matter wetin you carry come, God still dey call you: “Return to Me.”
No be because He wan punish you, but because He “gracious and merciful, slow to
anger, and full of steadfast love.”
The ash wey dem draw for
forehead no be just mark — e form cross shape because e carry deep meaning. E
remind us say judgment don already fall — on Jesus, no be on you. True, one day
we go return to dust, but inside Christ, we no go stay there; we go rise
again.
Paul talk about the
difference between the earthly and the eternal nature for 1 Corinthians 15:47,
51–57 — how we dey carry dust body but get hope of new resurrection life
through Christ.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· Where
I don dey depend on myself instead of turning back to God with honesty and
humility?
· Wetin
be the “dust” wey I need face today — my limits, my sin, my weakness — and how
God fit meet me there with mercy?
· How
e go look like if I pass through Lent, no as self-improvement season, but as
journey of total dependence on Christ?
PRAYER: Lord, You know my
weakness and my heart. I confess my sin and my wandering, and I return to You.
Breathe Your life inside all the dry and empty places for my spirit. Mark me
with the cross of Christ, and let this season draw me closer to You in truth
and humility. In Jesus name, amen.
