CHILD-FRIENDLY SYMPATHY AND EMPATHY!

Job 30:25 GNT

Didn't I weep with people in trouble and feel sorry for those in need?

 

Sympathy means feeling sorry for someone who is hurting. 

Empathy means trying to understand how someone feels by imagining yourself in their place.

This week, something happened that reminded me how important it is for us—especially believers—to show sympathy and empathy. Jesus wants us to care about others.

A sympathetic person comforts someone who is sad or struggling. We all need sympathy sometimes, just like Job did. Romans 12:15 teaches us to “weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice.”

When we care for others, we show we are becoming more like Jesus. 

1 Peter 1:22 says, “Love each other deeply with all your heart.”

The Bible teaches us many times to care for one another:

Galatians 6:2 – “Share each other’s troubles.”

1 Peter 3:8 – “Love each other and be tender-hearted.”

1 Corinthians 9:22 – “Try to understand others so you can help them.”

In Mark 2:1–4, the four friends helped a sick man by bringing him to Jesus. They saw his need, cared about him, and took action.

God also comforts us so that we can comfort others. 

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 says God helps us so we can help people who are hurting.

Sometimes we don’t know what to say or do—that’s okay. 

When that happens, the best thing we can give is love, a listening ear, and kindness.

We must try to understand others, be humble, and treat everyone with love. 

Like Job said in Job 29:16, we should look for ways to help those in need.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       When did I show sympathy or empathy recently, and did it show the heart of Jesus?

·       Who around me needs comfort or someone to listen, and how can I help this week?

·       What stops me from showing sympathy or empathy, and how can I ask God to help me grow?

PRAYER: God of all comfort, help me show real sympathy and empathy to people who need it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
