PIDGIN SYMPATHY AND EMPATHY!

Sympathy na when person show pity or sorrow for another person wey dey pass through bad thing, and e still respond in way wey match wetin that person dey feel. E also mean understanding wey dey between people—common feeling and shared support because dem dey reason alike and feel alike. 

Something wey happen this week make me put myself for that person shoe and understand say sympathy and empathy na sometin wey everybody, especially believers, suppose dey show from time to time—if no be always. 

Empathy na ability to understand and share another person feeling. You be sympathetic and empathic person? Or you just get one of the two? Sympathetic person dey reach out with compassion to person wey dey in need, stand by am to comfort and help am. 

We dey appreciate when people show us sympathy, just as others dey appreciate am from us. Sometimes we dey cry for sympathy but e go be like say nobody understand wetin we dey feel or pass through, so dem no fit give us di kind sympathy we want—just like Job. Romans 12:15 describe and encourage this kind sympathy: make we rejoice with those wey dey rejoice and cry with those wey dey cry. 

Anytime person dey show sympathy or empathy to others, e dey show mark of Jesus—and na this be goal and calling of every Christian. 1 Peter 1:22 talk am: “Una don klean una soul with di trut wey una dey obey and as brodas and sistas, make una love each oda well-well.” If we see say compassion towards others—especially believers—no too dey our life, make we ask God for help. 

Bible full of scriptures wey encourage sympathy and empathy, like Galatians 6:2: “Share each other’s troubles and problems, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” 1 Peter 3:8 talk say: “So, make una live for peace togeda, dey sorry for each oda; love one anoda and nor dey karry body up.” 1 Corinthians 9:22 still add say when Paul dey with those wey weak or oppressed, e dey enter their level so that e fit bring dem come Christ. 

To dey sympathetic, as we see for Mark 2:1–4, na one strong way to bring people come Jesus make dem know am too. Dis friends for Mark 2 be correct example: dem feel their friend need, act on top that feeling, push through obstacles to help am, and finally carry am come meet Jesus. 

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 talk say: “Make wi tank God wey bi awa Oga God Jesus Christ Papa, di God wey dey give mesi and konfort, 4E dey help us wen wi dey trobol, so dat wi go fit help odas thru di help wey E help us. Here we see say to minister to others and help them through their trouble by showing sympathy na one way to praise God. 

Sometimes we genuinely no know how to show sympathy or empathy to somebody. No be because we wicked or we no care; e fit just be say we no really understand the situation or we no get words or action to express wetin dey our heart. For such times, di best thing we fit do na to offer listening ear and love. 

We must learn to understand and appreciate everybody unique needs and gifts so that we go fit work together in harmony as 1 Peter 3:8 encourage—make we courteously and humbly offer love; love no dey miss road. 

Believers suppose learn to be like Job wey talk for Job 29:16: “I was a father to the poor and needy; the cause of him wey I no know I search out.” 

REFLECTION QUESTIONS 

·       For which recent situation I choose to show sympathy or empathy, and how my response reflect Jesus heart? 

·       How I fit intentionally show Godly compassion to people wey dey aroundwey need comfort, support, or listening ear this week? 

·       Wetin dey hinder me from expressing heartfelt sympathy or empathy, and how I fit ask God make Him help me grow for this area as Bible encourage? 

PRAYER: God of all comfort, help me to express Godly sympathy and empathy to those wey dey in need around me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
