BE ALERT

Matthew 25:1-13 AMPC

Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.

[2] Five of them were foolish (thoughtless, without forethought) and five were wise (sensible, intelligent, and prudent).

[3] For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take any [extra] oil with them;

[4] But the wise took flasks of oil along with them [also] with their lamps.

[5] While the bridegroom lingered and was slow in coming, they all began nodding their heads, and they fell asleep.

[6] But at midnight there was a shout, Behold, the bridegroom! Go out to meet him!

[7] Then all those virgins got up and put their own lamps in order.

[8] And the foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.

[9] But the wise replied, There will not be enough for us and for you; go instead to the dealers and buy for yourselves.

[10] But while they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were prepared went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut.

[11] Later the other virgins also came and said, Lord, Lord, open [the door] to us!

[12] But He replied, I solemnly declare to you, I do not know you [I am not acquainted with you].

[13] Watch therefore [give strict attention and be cautious and active], for you know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of Man will come.

The Bible teaches and encourages us to be alert. There is a dangerous lack of watchfulness today, even though repeatedly, the scriptures command us to be watchful as seen in Luke 21:36.

The parable of the Ten Virgins is for all professing Christians to understand why we must be alert, who are being warned of the absolute need for sufficient oil (anointing, grace, and zeal), that of sufficient depth and reality in our spiritual life if we are to be admitted into Christ's kingdom. Unless our lives are fully committed to God's Word, there is an extreme danger that our lamp will run out of oil and our lights go out.

This parable illustrates what believers should and should not do while waiting for the master’s return.

It is of the utmost importance to stay alert.

Do not forget or get disconnected from the source, the infilling of the Holy Ghost is your divine source.

The instruction here according to Jesus is to watch because the day and hour of His coming are unknown to any man. Believers should live as if the Lord might come at any moment.

Are your lamps trimmed and filled with oil? Because only those who stay alert will make it and not fall.

We see foolishness and wisdom all packed together in this scripture. Lamps signify spiritual activities but there will be no lamp without the divine connection to the Holy Ghost, we cannot afford to run empty because our light begins to go dim without oil.

Watch out for the things that may drain your oil, such as (these are things we should do but do not or do that we shouldn’t) dry prayer altar, Pride, Lack of bible study, and distractions.

A soldier is always alert so he can do his job properly, as soldiers in God’s army we should always be alert on our assignments. What’s the use of a sleeping army, if they can’t stay awake to guide and watch the kings? As seen in 1 Samuel 26:12-14.

Jesus says watch, be a ready vessel with a ready heart, standing in your place or position of assignment. Keep watch, watch your spiritual account because the spiritual auditors will show up one day expecting an account, will you be able to deliver?

The ten virgins are Christians all over the world. The wise virgins are those of us whom James 1:22 refers to as having heard, understood, and practiced the teachings of Christ while the foolish virgins are those who heard but did not understand the teachings of Christ or understood but did not practice them.

The virgins’ lamps are our hearts, while the oil is the good values and good deeds that Jesus Christ, the bridegroom, teaches and expects us to do. The merchants are pastors, leaders, and fellow Christians who encourage, pray, and give us good counsel. Midnight is the unknown day or the hour when Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom, will come again to take the righteous ones to Heaven for the everlasting wedding feast while closing the door of Heaven on the wicked ones who will be thrown away.

Which category are you in? Are you alert to the bridegroom’s coming? Will you go into the wedding feast with him or be left out in utter darkness?

Watch, therefore—stay alert and be prepared! Consider how many of us slumber! How many are asleep? How many are seized with lethargy? How many are quite dead? Are you one of these? Or are you awake, alert, and ready with your lamp trimmed with extra oil?

PRAYER: Father, help me to be watchful always and be alert to the schemes of the enemy in Jesus’ name, amen.
