JOINT VENTURE

1 Kings 5:1-18 NASB

Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon when he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram had always been a friend of David.

[2] Then Solomon sent word to Hiram, saying,

[3] “You know that David my father was unable to build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the wars which surrounded him, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.

[4] But now the Lord my God has secured me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune.

[5] So behold, I intend to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, just as the Lord spoke to David my father, saying, ‘Your son, whom I will put on your throne in your place, he will build the house for My name.’

[6] Now then, issue orders that they cut cedars from Lebanon for me, and my servants will be with your servants; and I will give you wages for your servants in accordance with all that you say, for you yourself know that there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.”

[7] When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he greatly rejoiced; and he said, “Blessed be the Lord today, who has given to David a wise son over this great people.”

[8] So Hiram sent word to Solomon, saying, “I have heard the message which you sent me; I will do everything you wish concerning the cedar and juniper timber.

[9] My servants will bring the timbers down from Lebanon to the sea; and I will have them made into rafts to go by sea to the place where you direct me, and I will have them broken up there, and you will carry them away. Then you shall do what I wish, by giving food to my household.”

[10] So Hiram gave Solomon all that he wished of the cedar and juniper timber.

[11] Solomon then gave Hiram twenty thousand kors of wheat as food for his household, and twenty kors of pure oil; this is what Solomon would give Hiram year by year.

[12] And the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, just as He promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a covenant.

[13] Now King Solomon conscripted forced laborers from all Israel; and the forced laborers numbered thirty thousand men.

[14] Then he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month in shifts; they were in Lebanon for a month, and two months at home. And Adoniram was in charge of the forced laborers.

[15] Now Solomon had seventy thousand porters, and eighty thousand stonemasons in the mountains,

[16] besides Solomon’s 3,300 chief deputies who were in charge of the project and ruled over the people who were doing the work.

[17] Then the king issued orders, and they quarried large stones, valuable stones, to lay the foundation of the house with cut stones.

[18] So Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders and the Gebalites cut the stones, and they prepared the timbers and the stones to build the house.

A joint venture is an arrangement in which two or more parties agree to pool their resources for the purpose of accomplishing a specific task. This task can be a new project or any other business activity. Each participant in a joint venture is responsible for profits, losses, and costs associated with it. However, the venture is its own entity, separate from the participants’ other business interests.

Our Christian faith and walk are a joint venture. The kingdom of God is a venture all on its own, and we all work together to make it famous, but within it, we have our separate and individual ministries.

No one can do ministry on their own or alone. We need to work with other people to carry out God’s mandate of the ministry of reconciliation mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 by pooling our resources, skills, talents, anointing, and gifts together, as Romans 12:6 states, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us… let [us] use [them] in proportion to [our] faith.” Spiritual gifts are mentioned in three separate passages in the New Testament: Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 4. The gifts are not identical, and some overlap occurs but varies. According to 1 Corinthians 12:6, God the Father pours in power, Jesus the Son assigns the ministry, and God the Holy Spirit gives out the gifts as He deems necessary for the proper functioning of the church body.

Each person may have one or more spiritual gifts and is encouraged to use them in love and humility to build up the body of Christ. Spiritual gifts are meant to build up the church, share His message, and glorify God.

Joint venture is what we do when we pull all of these together for kingdom purposes.

Throughout the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, we see how joint ventures were employed to gather all the resources and equipment needed for the work of the kingdom.

Although David had the idea and plans to build God a temple, he couldn’t as per God’s instructions. However, he made adequate provision for Solomon to begin building. When Solomon was ready to begin building, he joined forces with those who had what he needed to build with.

What are you venturing into? Have you discovered and engaged with those who have what you need to join your venture?

Whom are you engaging in your joint venture? Are they kingdom-minded? Are they willing and able to go all the way to the end and success of the venture with you?

There are all kinds of ventures and partnerships in the world, but the most profitable and beneficial is spiritual partnership and venture. We can only do the work of ministry and the kingdom by pulling resources together to reach more people and make more impact for God.

David provided some building materials and equipment for Solomon, but he may have needed more, leading him to approach Hiram, the king of Tyre.

There are specific people who the Lord has prepared to help, support and assist us in every venture and like Solomon did, we must know and to reach out to them to ask for their help.

If we are to go into a joint venture with anyone, we must be sure that it’s what the Lord requires and it’s according to Colossians 3:17, which says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

PRAYER: Lord, thank you for granting me opportunities to join and partner with other believers in carrying out your mandate. In Jesus’ name, amen.
