RETURN WHERE GRACE FOUND YOU

Esther 6:6-14 NASB

Haman then came in and the king said to him, “What is to be done for the man whom the king desires to honor?” And Haman said to himself, “Whom would the king desire to honor more than me?”

[7] Therefore Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king desires to honor,

[8] have them bring a royal robe which the king has worn, and the horse on which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal turban has been placed;

[9] then order them to hand the robe and the horse over to one of the king’s noble officials, and have them dress the man whom the king desires to honor, and lead him on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘So it shall be done for the man whom the king desires to honor.’”

[10] Then the king said to Haman, “Quickly, take the robe and the horse just as you have said, and do so for Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting at the king’s gate; do not fail to do anything of all that you have said.”

[11] So Haman took the robe and the horse, and dressed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “So it shall be done for the man whom the king desires to honor.”

[12] Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate, while Haman hurried home, mourning, with his head covered.

[13] And Haman informed Zeresh his wife and all his friends of everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish origin, you will not prevail over him, but will certainly fall before him.”

[14] While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and quickly brought Haman to the banquet which Esther had prepared.

Bitterness, disillusionment, anger, envy, and every negative emotion can cause us to stray from the place of grace and keep us out of it. Grace always finds and meets us somewhere for the manifestation and fulfilment of God’s will. Sadly, if we don’t allow that grace to keep leading, we may lose out on what grace offers all around.

Chapters 5-7 of Esther are ones we need to pay attention to, to understand and appreciate the grace of God, how it works, and the magnitude offered to us always. No matter where life takes us, what happens, and where we end up, we must learn to appreciate how far grace leads and directs us. We must never forget but always return to where grace found us.

Greed is the biggest factor in us not wanting to return to where grace found and met us because we think every advancement or promotion is profitable to us. Greed was one thing that Mordecai wasn’t driven by. Mordecai was happy to sit at the city gate before recognition and was happy to return there after the fanfare of recognition.

So many of us are happy to be recognized, and once we are, we are quick to swiftly move to whatever road and doors grace opened for us without a thought for how much we may still need to return and remain where we received grace for the completion of that grace. Mordecai recognized the general grace of God in life and the particular grace operating in his life. When recognition, applause, and promotion came, he didn’t allow it to get to him enough for him to abandon the place where he knew grace found and met him.

Wherever grace finds and meets us is a place of character building. John MacArthur says, "Integrity is the main issue that makes the difference between a good leader and a bad one. According to Scripture, virtually everything that truly qualifies a person for leadership is directly related to character. It’s not about style, status, personal charisma, clout, or worldly measurements of success." The Holy Spirit is the building block of these characters according to Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.”

There is no law against grace; no law can overthrow, undermine, or nullify grace as the Lord Himself declares that His grace is sufficient for us in 2 Corinthians 12:9. But we must always covet His grace. Colossians 1:10 says, “so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” When we please the Lord and walk in ways that are worthy of His name, He allows His grace to open and close doors while maintaining the position grace grants us.

Ruth found grace on Boaz’s threshing floor in Chapter 3 and made the effort to remain there. When it was time, she returned to where grace met her, and grace opened the door of marriage to Boaz for her. Proverbs 10:9 is sadly lacking in today’s culture: “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” Mordecai could have gained entrance to the palace by two ways: saving the king’s life and by marriage, but he didn’t. He walked in integrity, waiting on and for God to lead, direct, and open the doors of opportunity, and the grace was truly sufficient for him.

Never allow life and circumstances to take you so far off the path of grace. If it does, be sure to find and make your way back to where grace found and met you.

PRAYER: Gracious Father, thank you for your grace that makes way for me and restores lost opportunities in Jesus’ name, amen.
