ARE WE THERE YET?
Philippians 3:12-14 TLB
I don't mean to say I am perfect. I haven't learned all I should even yet, but I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ saved me for and wants me to be. [13] No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be, but I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, [14] I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us up to heaven because of what Christ Jesus did for us.
If you have ever been on a trip with a child (or even a teenager or some adults), you have likely heard the question, “Are we there yet?” Sometimes, you hear it so often that you get sick of hearing it. “Are we there yet?”
We are like these little children when we are waiting for God to do what we’ve asked Him to, and it seems to take forever to materialize. “Are we there yet? Is it time, Lord? Can I have it now, Father?” These questions all point to our impatience in waiting.
The phrase “Are we there yet?” can be explored from various biblical perspectives, often relating to the journey of faith, patience, and trust in God’s timing.
The book of Exodus is a prime example of “Are we there yet?” Starting with Moses when God called him, he had to go through a training process to carry out God’s mandate. I am sure he reached a point of asking, “Am I there yet? Is this it? Is it finished?” and probably more of his own versions of the question.
How about you? Are you in a situation that is making you question God or doubt His word and promises, repeatedly asking if you’re there yet?
Patience is both a virtue and a fruit of the Spirit, but it is often lacking in us when we want God to move speedily, at least at our pace. Reflecting on impatience and God’s faithfulness can provide deep insights into the depth of God’s love and grace. We see this in the Israelites’ journey spanning Exodus 11-17. Despite being freed from slavery, they faced numerous challenges and often questioned God’s plan, frequently asking, “Are we there yet?”
Paul’s teachings on perseverance are vital to our spiritual walk and victories. Perseverance is the action or condition of steadfastness. Old Testament Israel waited generations for the fulfilment of promises that many believers never lived to see, as described in Hebrews 11:1, 13, 21-22, 39. Still, Paul and the scriptures teach us to persevere, to wait, and not to be anxious enough to keep asking, “Are we there yet?”
I find myself asking God a similar question about the situations I am facing and the things I am expecting. I want to know if I am near the time of fulfilment and how long I have to wait. I ask Him, “Am I there yet, Lord? Is it time, Lord?” And He answers me, “No, but we’re getting closer.”
In some cases, this could be a sign of doubt and unbelief, but more often, it’s a sign of impatience.
This is also a question every believer should have on their lips regarding the end times and the return of Christ, as stated in Matthew 24:33. The disciples asked a similar question of Jesus in Matthew 24:1-3, saying, “Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Simply put, “Are we there yet? Is it time yet?”
Be careful where you seek answers to this question. You don’t want to end up with the wrong doctrine that will mislead or derail you. Jesus warns us that in the last days, deception will cover every part of life. People will seek easy answers instead of God’s truth. They will follow false messiahs because they can’t confront their own need for redemption. The truth of the Bible will make them uncomfortable, so they will flee to liars.
Are we there yet? You may be waiting on the Lord for His promises, healing, a miracle, an open door, or whatever it may be. If you’re not there yet, it’s because it’s not yet God’s time. As Galatians 6:9 says, in due time (the right time, God’s appointed time, and the fullness of time), He will make all things beautiful.
Are we there yet? Almost!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, open my heart and mind to understand Your plan, that I might be ready for whatever happens next and not hurry the process of growth and development in Jesus’ name. Amen.
