DISCLAIMER!
John 9:17-23 AMPC
Accordingly they said to the blind man again, What do you say about Him, seeing that He opened your eyes? And he said, He is [He must be] a prophet! [18] However, the Jews did not believe that he had [really] been blind and that he had received his sight until they called (summoned) the parents of the man. [19] They asked them, Is this your son, whom you reported as having been born blind? How then does he see now? [20] His parents answered, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind. [21] But as to how he can now see, we do not know; or who has opened his eyes, we do not know. He is of age. Ask him; let him speak for himself and give his own account of it. [22] His parents said this because they feared [the leaders of] the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should acknowledge Jesus to be the Christ, he should be expelled and excluded from the synagogue. [23] On that account his parents said, He is of age; ask him.
A disclaimer is a statement that denies something, especially responsibility for a particular situation. The Bible doesn’t specifically mention “disclaimers” as we understand them today. However, it does provide guidance on related concepts like honesty, integrity, and clear communication.
For instance, the Bible emphasizes honesty and truthfulness. Proverbs 12:22 says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” As believers, we must draw the line at blatant and deliberate lies, regardless of the reasons, especially to avoid trouble. Apart from the fact that lying is a sin, Psalm 101:7 tells us that no one who practices deceit shall dwell in God’s house; no one who utters lies shall continue before His eyes. This means that lies, in any form, drive us away from God.
Every sector of society, except the spiritual, has a disclaimer. God doesn’t disclaim His word. For example, a medical disclaimer advises that the information provided is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Imagine that! A no-responsibility disclaimer declares that the provider is not responsible for any errors or omissions in the content. A warranty disclaimer regards the accuracy or reliability of the information provided.
Jesus had just performed a miraculous healing, and the Pharisees, as usual, were not happy. They would rather falsify information than acknowledge the miraculous power of Christ. Even after the healed man explained how Jesus healed him, they still sought a reason or excuse to discredit Christ. They thought the parents of the healed man would support their claims. Unfortunately for them, these parents were cowards who would rather save their necks than give credit to the one who healed their son.
Companies and organizations are quick to disclaim their claims on whatever services they offer to avoid misuse and potential lawsuits. Lies are lies, regardless of the motives. Drug manufacturers develop drugs and tell us what they are meant for but then proceed to say they cannot guarantee the effectiveness of their own product, or the side effects suffered from taking their drugs. Almost everything or everyone disclaims, but the Lord does not! He not only tells us the truth but also guarantees all truth according to John 17:17.
Jesus taught about the importance of clear and straightforward communication in Matthew 5:37. He says, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” Romans 3:4 tells us there are shades of truth in man but never in the Lord. He never lies!
Integrity is important to our faith. One little white lie may cause someone to lose faith, hope, and peace. Living with integrity is a recurring theme in the Bible. Proverbs 10:9 states, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” When handling the word of God, we must be ready to give an answer for our faith and not disclaim the word of God, as stated in 1 Peter 3:14-15. The word of God is absolute and has no shadows lurking for anyone to twist to their narrative, as the Pharisees and the parents in our text could have.
We must seek the word of God in all things, thoroughly understanding it, so it can be applied to the use of disclaimers, ensuring that they are used to communicate honestly and clearly in all situations.
Jesus claimed to be God the Messiah in John 8:58, and the Pharisees were bent on disclaiming Jesus’ claim. Hence, all their efforts to find proof and evidence of his blasphemy, as seen in their interaction with these parents. It’s natural to want to save oneself in danger, and these parents were no different. They were more interested in self-preservation than the truth, especially the truth of confessing Christ as Lord, Messiah, and healer (miracle worker), even though it was their son who was healed.
Whenever we find ourselves doing the same, then we know we’ve stepped off the wagon of truth and unto the bandwagon of deception.
God does not disclaim!
PRAYER: Lord, God, help me to remember that your word is truth always and never to disclaim or disprove the scriptures in any circumstance in Jesus’ name, amen.
