HURT AND BRUISED.
Psalm 147:3 AMPC
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds [curing their pains and their sorrows].
Everyone gets hurt, intentionally or otherwise. We cannot avoid getting hurt as long as we’re alive. Feelings, though not fully trustworthy, are still important to our well-being because they indicate that our hearts work. All kinds of relationships have ended because people couldn’t control or manage their feelings and hurt.
Sadly, being hurt is also present within the church and among Christians. Man’s inhumanity to each other has reached an all-time low in the last decade and seems to have no end in sight. The church of God, which should be a sanctuary and safe place, is no better than outside in the cold.
No human being has ever lived free from personal hurt and pain. Adversity, suffering, trouble, problems, sickness, tragedy, crisis, persecution, opposition, anger, bitterness, disappointment – all these and more attack us from every direction and hurt us, often deeply. Sometimes we hurt because of circumstances beyond our control – the death of a loved one or an illness. But most of our hurt comes from relationships with those around us. Glory be to the Lord for the consolation within the scriptures, as Psalm 34:18 puts it: “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.”
We cannot guarantee not to feel hurt; we certainly will. But we are guaranteed comfort from the God of all comfort in 2 Corinthians 1:3, strength to face the hurt in Psalm 73:26, encouragement in Colossians 3:13, and healing from our text.
Some people may only experience hurt, while others may experience both and struggle to cope or overcome these feelings. But we must. Believers have the Holy Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit to help them through rough and tough seasons, especially the fruit of self-control. Without this, Proverbs 25:28 says, “A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” Such a person is exposed and vulnerable to the direction of their feelings.
Betrayal is part of life. Jesus was hurt and betrayed by one who should have been a friend, Judas. Epic hurt, bruise, and betrayal! Job felt betrayed and hurt by his friends, bruised so much that he could say in Job 19:13-14: “My relatives stay far away, and my friends have turned against me. My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me.”
How deeply have we been hurt? In any sphere of life, betrayal and hurt are daily manifested, causing bruised emotions, feelings, and egos. Sometimes, hurts are unintentionally caused, but when deliberate, it would be from those closest to us. David knew this very well, for him to say in Psalm 55:12-14: “It is not an enemy who insults me—I could have handled that—nor is it someone who hates me and who now arises against me—I could have hidden myself from him—but it is you—a man whom I treated as my equal—my personal confidant, my close friend! We had good fellowship together; and we even walked together in the house of God!”
So very true! The saddest thing about hurt and betrayal is that it never comes from those we perceive as our enemies. Even Matthew 10:36 says so: “Your worst enemies will be the members of your own family.” And Psalm 41:9 confirms it: “Even my closest friend whom I trusted, the one who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.”
Life will betray us, but God will never. So many have left the church, some even “leaving God” because of hurts and bruises. Psalm 27:10 promises that “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD cares for me.” If this is you, remember that God is the only one who can heal those hurts and bruises. Let Him care for you.
PRAYER: Father, let your tender love and compassion sooth me from every hurt, bruise and betrayal in Jesus’ name, amen.
