AGE SHOULD NOT BE A BARRIER

1 Timothy 4:12 AMPC

Let no one despise or think less of you because of your youth, but be an example (pattern) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.

How old are you? Do you know exactly how old you are or just what you were told? You don’t look old enough! Are you old enough for that? You’ll understand when you’re older. I’m too old for that. These are some ways people allow age to become more important than whatever serves as a barrier to their calling, talent, and gifts. But age is only an expression of time.

God does not look at age; it’s just a number, and you can only be as old as you feel or your mind conjures. Some people attribute wisdom and success to age and life’s experience, but not according to Paul. Youth or age should not determine what one can and can’t do because, after all, according to Philippians 4:13, everyone is enabled by Christ.

Timothy was an experienced missionary who had served about 15 years with Paul, yet he wasn’t as old as Paul or even as accomplished. Is your age a barrier to your wholehearted service and walk with God? Age alone does not always warrant respect and honor; age must be mixed with integrity and a godly life according to Proverbs 16:31.

God doesn’t choose and send anyone based on age or experience. Like Joseph in Genesis 37:1-5, who was only seventeen when he was sold into slavery, with no experience, skill, or training, and started what was effectively his ministry. Naaman’s maidservant in 2 Kings 5:1-3 was a teen with no name who was captured from Israel and taken to Aram, but was strategically used by God to advance her master’s healing in the hands of the God of Israel. She stood as an evangelist and an ambassador with boldness, courage, and confidence that should have been missing because of her circumstance and age, but was there nonetheless.

Nobody has yet lived as long as Methuselah, whose days were recorded as 969 years before he died in Genesis 5:27, yet he was busy fulfilling scriptures by replenishing the earth. These days, some people haven’t started living at all but complain of the difficulty of doing things because of age.

David is another one whose age didn’t deter him from following and serving God. He didn’t even allow age to stop him from facing Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. He trusted that the God who called him would always be with him, and that’s all God needs from us. To trust Him and allow Him to lead and guide us as He desires. David was just thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years.

Proverbs 20:29 says that the strength of the youth is their glory, meaning that they can do more for God because of the strength and stamina of youth. A person’s age is rarely mentioned in Scripture. Given the Bible’s silence on the merit or demerit of age, we can say that, in the end, age is far less important than other issues such as salvation, spiritual maturity, and expression of the fruit of the Spirit.

If you allow your age to be a barrier to serving God, how do you think those days that God planned for you according to Psalm 139:16 that you haven’t yet lived will come to pass if you think you are either too young or old? Everyone will grow old one day, but we grow daily in other areas, including yearly additions. Yet God does not require that to use us for His glory. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a teenager, and Moses was an old man, but God used both of them regardless. Don’t allow your age to be a barrier to fulfilling destiny.

PRAYER: Thank you, Lord, that no matter how young or old I am, I can be useful for your kingdom and purpose. Help me to never despise the young or old. In Jesus’ name, amen.
