Psalm 23:1-6 TLB

Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything I need! [2-3] He lets me rest in the meadow grass and leads me beside the quiet streams. He gives me new strength. He helps me do what honors him the most. [4] Even when walking through the dark valley of death I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me, guarding, guiding all the way. [5] You provide delicious food for me in the presence of my enemies. You have welcomed me as your guest; blessings overflow! [6] Your goodness and unfailing kindness shall be with me all of my life, and afterwards I will live with you forever in your home.

Do you have a shepherd besides the Lord? The Lord is my shepherd and yours, and He alone is the good shepherd. We are only as good as we are, but with the Lord’s care for us, we are fully and totally completed in Him.

The twenty-third psalm is one of the most powerful and comforting passages in the Bible, packed full of promises. There are over 3,573 promises in the entire Bible, and 17 of those are in this psalm. These seventeen promises encompass every area of life.

Psalm 23 is called the psalm of David, and we know David recognized and intimately knew the Lord as his shepherd, as we all should. Not only for the benefits of having the Lord as our great shepherd but for all the other physical and material benefits.

According to Colossians 2:20, everything we are in Christ, from death to life and everything in between. David may not have known Christ as a shepherd as we do, but he did recognize the hand of God, the great shepherd, because he was always one and knew the operations and duties.

Many Christians accept Christ as Savior but not as the providing shepherd. David’s poetic testimony of the shepherd should assure us that all our needs can be met by the Lord, no matter how much and how often. If God met all of David’s needs, He certainly would meet all of yours, no matter what they are, as the psalm describes.

This psalm is all about relationships. It’s the intimate relationship that comes from spending time in God’s presence, as stated in Jeremiah 29:13, and earnestly seeking His face, according to Psalm 27:8.

Philippians 4:19 promises that God shall supply all our needs, not according to our wages, jobs, or abilities, but according to His riches in Christ Jesus. This promise of supply covers all our spiritual, physical, emotional, material, and eternal needs. What are you in need of? What and how much do you need that you think would be too much for our great provider?

John 10:11 calls Jesus our great shepherd who sacrifices Himself for the well-being of His flock. This illustrates His protective, nurturing, and sacrificial nature, emphasizing His leadership, guidance, and intimate knowledge of His followers.

Hebrews 13:20-21 says, "Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen."

Only the great and good shepherd can care for the sheep perfectly, as David recognized. He does this because He knows the sheep better than anyone else and especially knows what they need even before they do and provides it accordingly.

How can we say we trust the Lord, the chief shepherd of our soul, according to 1 Peter 5:4, from whom we will receive the unfading crown of glory?

From David’s testimony of his life as a shepherd in 1 Samuel 17:34-36, where he describes defending his flock from lions and bears, we see his courage and dedication as a shepherd. This role allowed David not only to recognize the Lord as his and our shepherd but to understand the responsibilities of the great shepherd.

Have you got evidence of the great and good shepherd of your soul? Are there things He’s done in your life and for you that only the great shepherd could have done?

The good shepherd provides and supplies us with all things, as well as blessing us with favor and eternal life.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for being my good shepherd who guides and leads me where I should go while providing for me in Jesus’ name, amen.
