FELLOWSHIP!

Matthew 18:20 AMPC

For wherever two or three are gathered (drawn together as My followers) in (into) My name, there I AM in the midst of them.

Fellowship involves communion and friendship with God and connects us with other believers in the Spirit of God and with God’s blessings. We are not created to live alone, in isolation, or in loneliness; we need fellowship with others. We need a relationship with God, but how many of us know how to fellowship with others and the Holy Spirit? The primary reason for fellowship is to join forces with others in a mutual activity.

The basis of fellowship is found in 1 John 1:7: “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.” Christ is the source and fount of all spiritual communion. Only when rightly related to the Lord do we experience true fellowship with another Christian. Just as light and darkness are incompatible, so a believer can have no real fellowship with an unbeliever. Neither can the Christian be in fellowship with those who walk contrary to the teaching of Christ, according to 2 John 1:9-11, or a professing Christian who is immoral, idolatrous, a drunkard, or a thief, according to 1 Corinthians 5:11.

The dynamic of all fellowship is Christian fellowship because, at the center of it, is Christ, uniting all races, tribes, and creeds for a heavenly mandate. When believers get together, God is among them; this is the foundation of our Christian gathering, according to Matthew 18:20.

Fellowship, throughout the scriptures, emphasizes the worth of Christian community bound together by faith and trust in Christ, as seen in Acts 2:42. One of the things the early church devoted herself to was fellowship, an integral part of Christian gatherings. This means that fellowship is a priority and one of the objectives for gathering is to manifest Proverbs 27:17. This is something we ought to emulate today. Instead, we often view fellowship as what we do in community halls, churches, or conference halls. Our modern-day fellowship is the place where we come occasionally to have casual conversations, do worldly activities in a “Christian” way, and enjoy coffee and biscuits, without making any meaningful spiritual impact on ourselves. True fellowship involves getting together for spiritual purposes: for sharing needs, for prayer intercession, for sharing the Word to encourage, comfort, and edify one another, according to Hebrews 10:24-25 and Acts 2:45-47.

Christian fellowship is needed to help communion, spiritual, and numerical growth. Sadly, many believers today do not recognize the importance of fellowship or local church involvement. All aspects of our spiritual lives depend on being together with other believers to encourage, teach, serve, and share life together.

Christian fellowship is critical! Being in the company of people who think like you do is important, according to 2 Corinthians 6:14. It’s very important to our growth and survival as Christians to be among fellow believers and not be in fellowship with unbelievers, so that we can learn from and teach each other. If you live in a church-wealthy community, you are likely to find that companionship. Most churches offer small group experiences that you can become a part of, like house fellowship, life groups, or cell groups. These are all geared to help grow your local church, boost friendship and companionship, and help you grow spiritually.

Through the Holy Ghost, we have fellowship with the Father and with one another, according to 1 John 1:3. The Holy Spirit is essential to our gathering, fellowship with Christ in grace, and with the Father in love. Otherwise, our gathering will just be another social gathering for eating, drinking, and merriment, as stated in Luke 12:19.

When the Lord prayed that all His disciples might be “one,” in John 17:20-21, a warm fellowship was implied that should prevail among them. Since fellowship involves getting together with others, we must understand that fellowship is based on something we have in common with other people. But the Bible, in 1 John 1:6-7, restrains believers from fellowshipping with those who walk in spiritual darkness but encourages fellowship with those who walk in the light.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, foster in me the desire to love and mix with those who will help me grow in positive and godly ways, that I may be in fellowship with you through them in Jesus’ name, amen.
