FIRE IN MY MOUTH!
Jeremiah 5:14 NET
Because of that, the LORD, the God who rules over all, said to me, “Because these people have spoken like this, I will make the words that I put in your mouth like fire. And I will make this people like wood which the fiery judgments you speak will burn up.”
We are in a generation now that seems to think the fire has gone out of God’s word, but not so according to our text. Fire is potent, and the scriptures use fire as a representation of purification, destruction, God’s presence, transformation, and divine retribution.
Fire is a representative symbol of God’s presence and an instrument of His power, either in the way of approval or of destruction, according to Exodus 3:2 and 14:19. There could not be a better symbol for God than fire, and one of His names is the Consuming Fire in Deuteronomy 9:3.
Fire is a living, breathing entity—fire eats and destroys whatever is in its path and breathes to remain alive. If the word of God is like fire shut up inside us, as Jeremiah 20:9 puts it, then the only outlet for that word is through our mouths. The word of God is a weapon, but only when used appropriately and powerfully because it needs to be declared verbally for the heavens to put it to work, as stated in Job 22:28.
God’s word will never fail. Like fire in our bones, God’s word is a revelation. The word of God is such a great weapon that God assures us in Revelation 11:5 that fire will pour out of our mouths against anybody who wants to harm us. It will be like firing missiles out of our mouths against adversity.
Speech is part of our daily life, but we do not need to talk all the time. In fact, the Bible says that there is “a time to be silent” in Ecclesiastes 3:7. Maintaining silence when others are speaking can be a mark of respect, as seen in Job 6:24. According to Proverbs 20:19, controlling our tongues to keep quiet about a confidential matter gives evidence of discretion and discernment, and we must learn to restrain our tongues when we speak. You may be at a place right now where you could easily give up on what God has placed in your heart, but like Jeremiah, you must let the fire that is shut up in your bones come out of your mouth as a two-edged sword weapon. When we pray, the words out of our mouths are like fire thrown either at the enemy or a hook reaching out to procure for us what grace has delivered and what faith paid for.
In 1 Kings 1 and 2 Kings 18, respectively, Elijah used fire as a weapon to defend his faith and himself. Whatever weapons we use as Christians, the word of God is the main and most powerful one. It is a double-edged sword, a hammer, and fire that can do more damage in any situation than any manufactured weapon.
God promises we will not die, but the power of life and death is still in our mouths, according to Proverbs 18:21. The power to change any situation is still within us. When we are provoked, we must understand the power of the word of God as a weapon of fire in our mouths and be careful how we use it.
On the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, cloven tongues like fire came down on God’s people, the same fire that comes on us when we receive the Holy Spirit. The tongues of fire were the emblem of the language we all speak. How great is God that He gave us a fire language of our own! The fire is ours to use; let’s use it, speak, and spit out the weapon of fire in our mouths.
PRAYER: Lord God, pour your Holy fire on me for empowerment, inspiration, and fervor for my faith in Jesus’ name, amen.
