OPPRESSED GROANING!

Exodus 2:23-25 CSB

After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned because of their difficult labor, they cried out, and their cry for help because of the difficult labor ascended to God. [24] God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. [25] God saw the Israelites, and God knew.

Isaiah 59:1 says the Lord’s ear is not so deaf that He cannot hear you. “Behold, Yahweh’s hand is not shortened, that it can’t save; nor his ear dull, that it can’t hear. Lo, the hand of Jehovah Hath not been shortened from saving, Nor heavy his ear from hearing.” God is not hard of hearing. He hears our cries—loud, soft, low, hysterical, and all the internal groanings.

Boy! Do we know how to groan! I think groaning is a language for some people. People can groan in pain, pleasure, joy, and sadness, but God hears them all. The Lord said in Exodus 3:7, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings.” Our groaning may not be pleasant, but the Lord hears and sees them all because He is never oblivious to our cry, pain, and suffering.

The Israelites had enjoyed years of peaceful cohabitation with the Egyptians and had always done their own thing without interference. But as usual in life, seasons change, and not always to our benefit or advantage, just as it did for the Israelites when a new Pharaoh who wouldn’t remember and acknowledge them came to the throne. Change is inevitable and often, it doesn’t come with goodies!

Verse 23 says, “the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God.” Are you too crying in groaning for deliverance? God hears and will do something about it in His time. He never ignores the cry of His people as Psalm 116:1-2 states, “I love the Eternal; for not only does He hear my voice, my pleas for mercy, [2] But He leaned down when I was in trouble and brought His ear close to me. So as long as I have breath, I will call on Him.”

So, call! Call on the only one who not just hears your voice and your pleas, but the only one who does something about whatever situation you bring to Him. Your groaning will move the Lord to deliver you. He says in Psalm 34:17 that He will deliver you from every trouble, whatever they may be.

One of the many blessings of the Holy Spirit is to pray for us in groaning while interpreting our praying in tongues as indicated in Romans 8:26. When we groan in prayer, especially in tongues, it’s an indication that we are overwhelmed by our situation and no longer know or have words to express our pain, desperation, and desire. The groaning draws the Lord’s attention as it did with the Israelites when He heard their groaning, remembered His covenant to deliver them when it was time. And when it was time, He looked down upon their suffering and acknowledged them.

Oppressed groaning can happen at any time or place. Are you in a place: work, relationship, neighbourhood, and even church, where you’re being oppressed? Cry out to Him in groaning and see Him move on your case as promised in Psalm 72:4. In Proverbs 17:5, God sees every oppression as a taunt towards Himself and He says He will take on their case as stated in Proverbs 22:23.

God coming down to see what the Israelites were going through didn’t mean He was blind but rather as stated in verse twenty-five, the Lord looked down upon them because He knew that the time had come for their rescue. The Lord knows when it’s time to step into your case for “you” because as stated in Isaiah 65:24, He heard you and is already working on your behalf. No matter how oppressed and by whom or what, let Psalm 149:7-9 give you hope, “Who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners. [8] The Lord opens the eyes of those who are blind; The Lord raises up those who are bowed down; The Lord loves the righteous. [9] The Lord watches over strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts the way of the wicked.”

PRAYER: Lord, God, because of the devastation and affliction, hear my needy groaning now and arise to set me in your safety where I belong. In Jesus’s name, amen.
