REMEMBER CHRIST!

1 Corinthians 11:24-26 AMPC

And when He had given thanks, He broke [it] and said, Take, eat. This is My body, which is broken for you. Do this to call Me [affectionately] to remembrance. [25] Similarly when supper was ended, He took the cup also, saying, This cup is the new covenant [ratified and established] in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink [it], to call Me [affectionately] to remembrance. [26] For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are representing and signifying and proclaiming the fact of the Lord's death until He comes [again].

Everyone, believers and non-believers alike, has heard this phrase. Most can connect it to the Last Supper, while others may not fully understand its meaning and implications.

The word "remember" is found 240 times in the entire Bible, but the most notable instance is Christ’s urging to us to "remember me." What Jesus actually said was, "Do this as often as you remember me."

Almost everywhere in the scriptures where the word "remember" is used, it’s about the Lord remembering us for something He’s promised, or us remembering the Lord’s promises. But Jesus was emphatic about his instructions for us to remember him.

Why? It is to be a memorial to Christ until he returns and when it’s to be observed in the kingdom. Of course, we don’t have to remember Christ only during Holy Communion, even though that’s one of Jesus’ instructions at the Last Supper. We are supposed to remember him always for the finished work of the cross.

Without Jesus’ instructions, does it mean we’re likely to forget him and his sacrificial death on the cross? Maybe, sometimes, not really! It depends on where you are; one of these may be your answer. Certainly, it may be an answer for many of us more than we know. Why? Because we sometimes forget Christ in the crises of life.

The crises of life are normal and should be expected, but sadly, the church has brainwashed Christians into believing that when we are in Christ, our life is rosy, easy, and world-looking prosperous. Do we really forget Christ? Yes, we do when things don’t work out as we planned or expected.

In instructing us to remember him, Christ is saying, "I’ve given you another powerful weapon in my blood and body to help you overcome the enemy," but you must remember that it was "me," Christ Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Remember me! As often as you can.

How much do you think about Jesus? How often is your often? Do you even think about him?

Moses tells us in Exodus 20:8 in the Ten Commandments to "remember the Sabbath day" even before the coming of Christ, which Christ confirms in Mark 2:28 that he is the Lord of the Sabbath—he is Lord over everything. Remember me! Remember the Sabbath!

If we have happy memories of good men according to Proverbs 10:7 for the things they’ve done, why should we not have good memories of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, especially at his urging?

So many believers only remember Christ when they are in difficulty and are overwhelmed by life choices. Then and only then do they remember that the name of Jesus is stronger and bigger than whatever they are going through without really knowing "the Christ" who did that "thing" for them. If they did, they would remember him always, in every situation, and be thankful according to Psalm 103:2.

Remember Christ! Not only when you need him to intervene on your case, not only when you use his name as a get-out-of-jail-free card, and certainly not only when things are going well, but ALWAYS. REMEMBER CHRIST ALWAYS!

"This is my body! This is my blood! Take it as often as you can in REMEMBRANCE OF ME!"

There is no limit to the often—it simply means many times, frequently, and as you like. That means there shouldn’t be any limit on when we partake of the spiritual meal, but mostly, it means we must constantly think of Christ as we would if we make Philippians 4:8 our motto: "think on these things." Christ is the "whatsoever" we must think of and fill our minds with things that inspire worship of God and service to others.

Remember Christ!

PRAYER: Lord, help me to always think of things that would inspire me to remember the sacrifice of Christ and remember him always in his name, amen.
