SPIRITUAL CREDIT REPORT

Isaiah 38:1-8 BSB

In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’” [2] Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, [3] saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. [4] And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying, [5] “Go and tell Hezekiah that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. [6] And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city. [7] This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised: [8] I will make the sun’s shadow that falls on the stairway of Ahaz go back ten steps.’” So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had descended.

A credit report is a detailed record of an individual's credit history, compiled by credit bureaus. It includes information such as personal information (name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth). A credit report is typically used to assess financial behaviour and creditworthiness, so it doesn't directly apply to spiritual issues. However, just as a credit report tracks your financial history, a spiritual credit report serves as a way to reflect on our spiritual journey. This includes:

Personal Growth: Milestones in our spiritual development and growth.

Spiritual Practices: Regular activities like meditation, prayer, or community service.

Challenges and Resolutions: Difficulties we've faced and how we've overcome them.

This is the report that Hezekiah gave the Lord on his deathbed. In Isaiah 38:3, Hezekiah says, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

Where did Hezekiah get the confidence to tell the Lord, who knows and sees all things, what he had done for God? Some might call this a self-centered prayer, but if it is a truth about his godliness, then he’s stating a fact rather than boasting. Are we bold and confident enough to state the truth of our godliness to the Lord like this? Do we even know how faithful and godly we are?

Hezekiah made three claims in his spiritual credit report:

I have walked with you in truth.

I have walked before you with a loyal heart.

I have done what is good in your sight.

He wept bitterly in humility while stating his claim in prayer and repented of his pride, as evident in 2 Chronicles 32:24-26. It was after this that the Lord assured him that his prayer had been answered.

Have you got a spiritual credit report for the Lord? Can you lay claim to your faithfulness to the Lord and His kingdom? Is your godliness enough to offer God as a strong reason for your petitions? Hezekiah did exactly as Isaiah 41:21 invites us all to do: “Present your case,” the Lord says. “Bring forward your evidence,” says the King of Jacob. Have you got any evidence to present along with your case? This is one of the most detailed courtroom scenes we find in the Bible, challenging the power of other gods and idols. Their silence is telling, assuring, and proving to us that there’s no other God besides the Lord of hosts, the only one with the power to give and grant life, as Hezekiah knew.

While our spiritual credit report isn't something formal or tracked by any institution in the world, it can be a useful way to reflect on our spiritual progress and areas for growth. In many cases, our spiritual maturity is tested and affirmed in the evidence of our spiritual report.

Hezekiah's earnest prayer, reminding God of his faithfulness and wholehearted devotion, invited divine intervention. God hears Hezekiah's prayer and sees his tears. Have you been praying and crying? God can see your tears and hear your prayers too. As He sent Isaiah back with a new report to Hezekiah, so too would He send a new report as promised in Isaiah 43:19.

The Lord sent Isaiah back to tell Hezekiah that He would add fifteen years to his life. As a sign of this promise, God made the shadow cast by the sun go back ten steps on the stairway of Ahaz. In addition, God promised Hezekiah that he would go up to the house of God in three days (meaning that he would be fully recovered enough to leave his bed).

Prayer is powerful! Hezekiah's heartfelt prayer is central to the story. It shows the power of sincere communication with the divine and how it can lead to profound changes, as seen in the miraculous sign given to Hezekiah after he presented his spiritual credit report in prayer.

PRAYER: Father, help me to always remember that when I present my spiritual credit report, you turn the case for and not against me, based on the blood of the Lamb. In Jesus’ name, amen.
