DIVINE INTERVENTION!
1 Samuel 7:7-11 TLB
When the Philistine leaders heard about the great crowds at Mizpah, they mobilized their army and advanced. The Israelis were badly frightened when they learned that the Philistines were approaching. [8] "Plead with God to save us!" they begged Samuel. [9] So Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it to the Lord as a whole burnt offering and pleaded with him to help Israel. And the Lord responded. [10] Just as Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines arrived for battle, but the Lord spoke with a mighty voice of thunder from heaven, and they were thrown into confusion, and the Israelis routed them [11] and chased them from Mizpah to Beth-car, killing them all along the way.
Intervention is any interference that may affect or benefit the interests of others. It is the act by which one protects or defends the interests of another. Elohim is not a passive God; He is actively involved in the lives and affairs of His creation, especially the saints.
Whenever a situation escalates completely beyond human help and becomes overwhelming, creating confusion and the inability to help oneself, God steps in to overcome the overwhelming situation—this is divine intervention. We’ve all been in such situations at some point in our lives, and the Lord has intervened for us.
Jacob faced an overwhelming situation in Genesis 30, with little help from those around him and no idea how to overcome it, until the revelation came by divine intervention, showing him how to resolve the issue he faced.
There are times when we feel abandoned by the Lord, seeing ourselves get deeper into a situation that seems to be draining the life out of us, without a clue of who will help and if anyone would. Yet, we know that the situation we’re in requires divine help and intervention.
The Israelites in our text probably felt this way. Here they were, gathered in repentance and sacrifice to the Lord, only to hear the enemy coming against them again. The enemy obviously considered their gathering a threat and attacked, wrongly assuming they were mobilizing against them.
The Israelite army had lost battles against the Philistines several times previously, so they had no hope of escaping them again, especially in an unprepared state like this. They were quickly filled with fear, as we might be in their shoes.
When we are in Christ, the fear of any situation should encourage us to cry out to the Lord, as it did the Israelites. Psalm 50:15 instructs us to call on the Lord in the day of trouble, and He will rescue us from overwhelming problems, as we have seen Him do repeatedly.
We all need divine intervention in certain areas of life, and the Lord is waiting for us to ask, as stated in Jeremiah 33:3. Only then will we be directed on what and how to do things.
The Israelites implored Samuel to intercede for them, saying, "Don’t stop crying out to the Lord for us!" The people had strong confidence in Samuel’s intercession because they knew he was a holy man of God, and that God would answer him and intervene for them.
The Philistines were so anxious to crush the Israelites that they were prepared to attack a religious gathering, not expecting any resistance and without considering divine intervention from the God of Israel.
The prophet's prayers and sacrifice were answered by a tremendous storm. Literally, the Lord thundered with great thunder and confounded the Philistines with a mighty tempest of thunder and lightning, no doubt slaying many with the lightning. The Philistines, panic-struck, were disordered and fled.
The Israelites, recognizing the divine intervention of God, courageously pursued the enemy they had so greatly feared and overthrew them with such havoc that the Philistines did not recover for a long time from the disastrous blow. This victory by divine intervention secured peace and independence for Israel.
Divine intervention is exactly what the Lord promises us in Exodus 14:14, saying that He alone can defeat our enemies. We just need to call and trust in Him. God is still able to thunder against anyone who threatens you and prove Himself to be your help and defender.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you for assuring me that you will intervein in my case whenever I ask, intervein now in those places I can’t speak in Jesus’ name, amen.
