NECESSARY SEPARATION!
Genesis 13:10-14 CSB
Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the LORD's garden and the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) [11] So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other. [12] Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities on the plain and set up his tent near Sodom. [13] (Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the LORD.) [14] After Lot had separated from him, the LORD said to Abram, "Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west,
There is an “after” for every breakthrough. In every situation and season, there are people we must separate from and who must separate from us before the word of God concerning us can speak.
The Lord has given us many prophetic words, and we often wonder when and why those prophetic words aren’t coming to pass as we expect. This may be because there are people and things that the Lord wants us to put in their places, people and things He wants us to separate and disconnect from.
After! After what? Why after? What happens after?
There are a lot of "afters" in life, often with unreasonable conditions. Only God’s "after" is guaranteed.
As believers, Christians must have the moral integrity that demands we maintain godly moral and ethical standards by separating from practices or associations that compromise our values, as we see Daniel do in Daniel 1:8.
The people we mix with, the places we go, and the things we partake in may be hindrances to our breakthrough, advancement, prosperity, and change. Seasons depend on what we do and don’t do according to God’s timetable, requirements, and purpose. Not everybody is meant to be part of our story, part of our journey, and certainly not be around us. That being the case, we must separate ourselves from them and them from us for our breakthrough to happen.
We read that Abraham and Lot separated to avoid conflict between their herdsmen. Abraham allowed Lot to choose his land first, which Lot shouldn’t have done out of respect for his uncle, but he did, and they parted ways to maintain peace and prosperity.
Verse 14 says, “After Lot had left, the LORD said to Abram, 'From where you are, look carefully in all directions.'”
After and not before.
Why did the Lord only speak “after” Lot left?
Bear in mind that Lot was in Abraham’s household when the Lord spoke to him concerning His plans and promises, but Lot was not part of God’s plan for Abraham. The Lord was waiting for this separation before making known to Abraham His additional revelation regarding the land he was called to.
But Lot is Abraham’s nephew, some would say. Yes. But that doesn’t mean because of family connection they must journey together or that God would have the same plans for them. No! It simply may mean that when God asked Abraham to leave his kindred, he was expected to completely sever all familial relationships, to leave all his kindred and be a separated people from them, as seen in Numbers 23:9.
Or, "after" may just mean that it was time for God’s word concerning Abraham to be fulfilled.
In Numbers 6, individuals who took the Nazirite vow separated themselves for a period of dedication to God. A necessary separation for consecration for God’s work. This included abstaining from wine, not cutting their hair, and avoiding contact with dead bodies. Nazirites were dedicated laypersons. Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist were lifelong Nazirites.
Solitude is a form of necessary separation for spiritual growth and advancement. Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to pray and spend time with God. In Mark 1:35, it says, "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." A necessary separation needed for freedom from distraction to spend time in prayer.
Some seasons don’t need some of the people around us. For us to advance and be effective, we must remove such people from around us or separate ourselves from them, as we see in Acts 15:36-41. Paul and Barnabas separated due to a disagreement over John Mark. This separation allowed them to continue their missionary work more effectively, with Paul taking Silas and Barnabas taking John Mark.
Are there people you need to separate from? It may be painful and difficult but necessary if we want to move in God’s purpose and direction.
PRAYER: Lord, help me not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, people, and situations that may hinder my spiritual integrity and create compromising situations. In Jesus’ name, amen.
