PROPHECY!

Amos 3:7 NASB

Certainly the Lord God does nothing Unless He reveals His secret plan To His servants the prophets.

What is prophecy? Prophecy is God’s word to His people as spoken by a chosen messenger. The Bible discusses prophecy in various contexts, addressing its purpose, nature, and the role of prophets. Here are key references related to the concept of prophecy. To prophesy means to proclaim or to announce God’s message. Prophets speak (or repeat) what God has told them. A prophet is God’s mouthpiece to the world. Prophecy is the message.

The very word of God is a prophecy in nature because whatever God says, He does. The prophecy of Jesus' birth is a central theme in Christian theology, reflecting the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies through the birth of Jesus Christ. These prophecies are seen as divine revelations that foretold the coming of the Messiah, who would bring salvation to humanity.  One of the most cited prophecies regarding the birth of Jesus is found in Isaiah 7:14, which states, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." The prophecy was fulfilled and established in Matthew 1:22-23.

Prophecy in the Bible is often described as a message from God delivered through a prophet. Its purpose is to guide, warn, encourage, and reveal God's will to His people as seen in 1 Corinthians 14:3.

Many books in the Old Testament are named after prophets who conveyed God's messages, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. These prophets often called people to repentance and foretold future events in Amos 3:7. It’s no different today. God still uses people as His mouthpiece in delivering the message of salvation, warnings and judgment.

Isaiah 53 describes a servant who would suffer for the sins of many, be despised and rejected, and ultimately bring healing through his wounds. This we all know is fulfilled in the life, suffering, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ as declared in 1 Peter 2:24.

One of the clearest and most significant statements on the nature of prophetic inspiration in the Old Testament is found in Numbers 12:6-8.  The prophetic gift of Moses was unique in that he alone received revelations directly from God because ordinarily, prophetic revelation was received through the medium of a dream or a vision and the meaning of prophetic revelation is not always completely clear; prophecy is sometimes ambiguous as 1 Corinthians 13:9-13 sates, we only know in part and therefore, prophecy in part.

In the New Testament, prophecy continues to play a significant role. The Apostle Paul discusses the gift of prophecy as one of the spiritual gifts given to believers for the edification of the church in 1 Corinthians 12:10, 14:1-5.

All prophecy, whether biblical or not, assumes that the prophet either possessed or was possessed by a supernatural power. The prophetic phenomenon or “ecstatic” prophecy appears to have been the new form of entertainment in the body of Christ today. Prophecy has become what people chase after today. Hardly do we find a Christian gathering where someone is not prophesying or asking for “what is the Lord saying”, prophecy and pressure is put on both the people of God for prophetic declarations and on the minister to perform. But we must be care not to seek the Lord’s hands rather than His face as stated in Psalm 105:4.

We mustn’t accept all prophecies, in fact, the Bible also advises believers to test prophecies to ensure they are truly from God. This involves discerning whether the prophecy aligns with Scripture and whether it promotes love and truth (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21, 1 John 4:1).

The Bible contains many prophecies about the end times as well, particularly in the books of Daniel and Revelation. These prophecies describe events that will occur before the return of Jesus Christ in Revelation 1:3.

In Hebrews 1:1-2- God spoke His word, Jesus, through prophets in various ways before speaking through His Son. And Revelation 19:10- The testimony of Jesus is described as the spirit of prophecy.

If you have the gift of prophecy as stated in 1 Corinthians 12:10, then prophesy, in a Godly manner and Spirit-led.

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord for the gift of prophecy, which reveals Your will and encourages us in our faith journey. Lord, we ask for discernment to understand and interpret Your messages correctly. Help us to test every prophecy against Your Word and to hold fast to what is good in Jesus’ name, amen.
