THE BEQUEATH NOT BEGAT LIFE!
Galatians 2:20 AMPC
I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His
crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me;
and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and
reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave
Himself up for me.
The term bequeath refers to leaving or transferring ownership
of personal property, money, or assets to a designated individual or entity,
often through a will, trust, or similar arrangement. Legally, it signifies the
act of passing on possessions to family members, friends, charities, or
organizations as part of one’s legacy.
On the other hand, begat is a term predominantly used in the
Bible, especially in genealogies, to denote that one person is the direct
ancestor or father of another. This term emphasizes blood lineage and
inheritance.
The "begat life" symbolizes the human life
inherited from our biological fathers, tracing all the way back to Adam. In
contrast, the "bequeathed life" represents the eternal life given to
us by Jesus Christ through His sacrifice on the cross. As believers, we
identify with Christ in His death, recognizing not only that He was crucified
for us but also that we were crucified with Him, spiritually. This act marks
the end of our identity as sinners in God’s sight, as well as the end of striving
to earn salvation through our efforts. Christ's death, burial, and resurrection
have bequeathed us eternal life.
We all inherited the "begat life," marked by sin,
from Adam and our biological parents. This life is characterized by sinful
habits, evil thoughts, and lustful desires. However, 2 Corinthians 5:17
proclaims that anyone in Christ becomes a new creation. They no longer operate
under the "begat life" but are transformed by the "bequeathed
life," which makes them brand new.
When we read the Bible’s genealogies, such as in Matthew
1:1-2, the term "begat" is used to trace bloodlines, illustrating
relationships: "Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob
begat Judas and his brethren." These genealogies affirm the fulfilment of
God’s promises, culminating in Jesus Christ. Jesus, begotten of man, bequeathed
eternal life to us through His death and resurrection.
As believers, our spiritual genealogy shifts. While our
biological lineage may include pagan ancestors and strongholds, the
"bequeathed life" translates us into Christ’s lineage, one marked by
freedom and truth. This transformation is both spiritual and profound.
Through His sacrifice, Christ bequeathed to us blessings,
birthrights, and inheritance—spiritually, physically, and materially—intended
to span generations, as reflected in Psalm 78:4. This inheritance aligns with
Old Testament patriarchal narratives, where blessings and inheritance were
vital to the unfolding of God’s covenant promises.
Romans 8:17 describes believers as heirs of God and co-heirs
with Christ. This inheritance, while not material, is spiritual, encompassing
eternal life and God’s promises. As 1 Peter 1:4 reminds us, it is an
inheritance that is "imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven
for you."
If you are in Christ, you have received Zoe, the divine life
of Christ, through the "bequeathed life."
PRAYER: Lord thank you for giving me eternal life and more in
Christ Jesus, amen.
